Leadership and Management are two terms that are often used interchangeably, or else used in very close relation with each other. But leadership is something that is difficult to define, because it is a word that can be defined in a number of different ways. Broadly speaking, however, leadership refers to the ability of an individual to influence a group of subordinate individuals to behave according to a certain manner, and the methods used to motivate those individuals to work together in order to attain a particular goal (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2000, p.4). Leaders, in other words, are innovators, they are men and women of vision, who take risks to inspire and to do the right thing. Management, meanwhile, is more concerned with organization, efficiency, oversight of employees - the more day-to-day activities involved in the running of an organization and in making sure that the organization and its employees are doing things right (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2000, p.8)…

There are many definitions of leadership. The Collins English dictionary defines leadership as “the leader(s) of a party or group.” Yet true leadership is much more than that. A leader can be the chief executive officer of an organization, or a first year employee who leads his or her team to success behind the scenes. A leader might lead through official authority and power, yet just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connections. Teaching others to be a leader is a daunting task within itself (Pankaew, 2013).…

Some theorists use the terms ‘leadership’ and ‘management’ reciprocally as if they are tantamount with one another, while others use them in a very purposeful sense to express that they are, in effect, rather different (Bush, 2003). Organisational successfulness, it is generally accepted, is dependant on both competent leadership and consistent management (Dimmock and Walker, 2005) According to Grace (1995) they do not follow from one or the other, but merely from the effective amalgamation of the two. Gamage and Pang (2003) claim they are incredibly complementary, although, the sine qua non of management success, has consistently averted professionals from considering that there is certainly a genuine distinction between the two.…

Leadership as a concept or notion lends itself easily to myriad definitions. Manning and Curtis (2012) describes leadership as the social influence that results from the capacity to initiate ideas and deeds that others can follow. A leader often stands in front of others and they follow in his footsteps. According to Hopen (2010), “leadership is the capacity to guide or direct others” (p.4). To Fulwiler (2005), leadership is the ability to make people do what they normally would not do or go to places they normally would not go. Leadership can also be defined as the…
