Alternative renewable resources for Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia’s economy today is very well based on the fact that they have been blessed with oil. “According to the Oil and Gas Journal, Saudi Arabia contains approximately 264 billion barrels of proven oil reserves (including 2.5 billion barrels in the Saudi-Kuwaiti shared "Neutral" Zone), amounting to around one-fifth of proven, conventional world oil reserves”.1 This clearly shows the dominance of Saudi Arabia in the oil market. Now there are other countries such as Iran who have become large producers giving less control to Saudi Arabia over the market share.
This image below shows the Oil and Gas fields in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
They are having competition and cannot sell oil freely at the prices that they want. Everything is almost based on oil. Without oil there would have been total chaos. Saudi Arabia would not be as developed as they are today. Because of global oil concerns of shortages in the future I believe it’s a good time to look for alternatives for oil. Only researching alternative energy sources and not exporting it.
This is because if Saudi run out of oil it will destroy the economy. They need to have a “back-up” plan. They need to invest in different resources of obtaining energy or finding substitutes for oil. This has its pros and cons as well. The thing is if Saudi Arabia plans on researching for substitutes of oil it will cost them money and it will be time consuming. But the advantage of this is that they are a rich country right now and can afford the research. But if they look into the fact that they have the sun shining very brightly they can use this to their advantage and invest in solar energy. This would be a very good alternative in obtaining energy because there are lots of deserts where solar panels could be set up and this would benefit them greatly. Also they can use the red sea to their advantage and maybe invest in hydro-electric
