ABSTRACT
When looking at the case study of Magda, we see a working woman who is undoubtedly suffering from some type of depressive state. There are a myriad of reasons as to why she quite possibly may not get the help that she deserves. The socio-cultural environment to which she has been accustomed is very unsympathetic to the needs of someone with a health issue such as depression. Because of this she may have to choose between a stigma attachment to her needs or her own health. The choice will be hers but most definitely one that she will have to make. …show more content…
She apparently has noticed some marked changes, and this is definitely a start. She has interpreted that there is a problem and the way in which she proceeds will definitely be influenced by her health belief and illness belief. A person’s health belief is influenced by so many factors. Some of which are their upbringing, their parent or guardian’s influence, and the people around them. The culture in which someone lives will also have a great influence on how they view their own health and approach to the illness. There is a possibility that Magda’s family would have thought that a mental health need was not a need at all. Or she could have had a family that looked at it completely different and realized that mental health is as important as physical health. This is an area that would heavily impact Magda and her choice for help. Chances are she is handling this all on her own and possibly not having someone to share it with, could make the burden even harder to bear. Her place of employment would be an area of concern, because chances are if mental health was viewed in a negative light in her country, it would be viewed this way in the workplace. If she sought help and it was discovered by her employer, discrimination could take place with a possibly demotion on her job or even worse the loss of her
