Requiem Analysis
In Lauren Oliver’s Requiem, Invalid Lena discovers that living in the Wilds is arduous. Lena’s former lover, Alex, reappears into her life and everything is changing. Hana, Lena’s best friend, has been cured and begins to think about Lena; even though she is not supposed to. She thinks about Alex too, and how she told on them before she was cured. Hana almost feels guilty about it, but the cure does not allow her to. Lena’s group of Invalids runs from regulators and scavengers. As a result, they slowly lose access to food, people, and shelter. Since there is no time to talk, Alex and Lena barely speak, and there is a lot of tension between them. Lena still has feelings for Alex, and her current lover, Julian, notices this but does not really say anything. Soon enough, Lena and her group comes up with a plan to annihilate the regulators. The plan does not go very well and many lives are lost. To add onto that, Lena finds out that one of her friends’, Lu, has become a traitor and gotten cured. She almost kills Lu, because she finds out that Lu’s been working with people from the other side of the wall. …show more content…
The new plan consists of tearing down the wall in Portland. This takes a lot of Invalids, but they do believe it will work out. When Lena gets to Portland with her group, they split up and she goes to look for her family. On the way, Lena is stopped by Hana and she takes her to her fiancés house to talk. Hana asks Lena questions about her life and the Wilds, confesses about telling on her and Alex, and tells her where her family is staying. Lena gets a little angry, but then she has to remind herself that this is not the same Hana she grew up with; she is different now. Lena explains to Hana that a bomb has been placed in the house and will go off any minute. As a result, Hana tells Lena to run before she gets caught, and Hana runs shortly after to avoid the

Cultural heritage defines who we are as a person or society. It is a bond that ties the people of a region or community together. This is learned and passed from the elders to the new generation but to achieve this, it has to be translated into representations such as art, language and religion. Hence to force a human being to reject and change these things is subduing or taking control over their culture. This action is practically taking away their identity and forcibly changing their values. The importance of culture lies in the fact that it is a link between people and their value systems. The ‘Stolen Generation’ which refers to the generations of children that were an Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who were taken from their families by the Australian Federal and State government agencies and church missions, under acts of their respective parliaments, is an epitome of this damaging action. This action of subduing of a culture lost was a significant theme represented in Matt Ottley’s remarkable multi modal work entitled Requiem for a beast. Ottley cleverly utilised several visual conventions, symbolic codes, and written techniques that enhanced my understanding of this theme.…

Lena Lingard intrigues me. She’s gentle even though she’s lived on the farm her entire life and she manages to make the littlest things exciting with her charisma. In ways, her adventurousness and excitement make her similar to Tony. However, they differ in that Ántonia possesses a quiet beauty and inner strength that contrasts with Lena’s liveliness. It’s strange-- I dream the same dream “a great many times, and it [is] always the same. I [am] in a harvest-field full of shocks, and I [am] lying against one of them. Lena Lingard [comes] across the stubble barefoot, in a short skirt, with a curved reaping-hook in her hand, and she [is] flushed like the dawn, with a kind of luminous rosiness all about her. She [sits] down beside me, [turns] to me with a soft sigh and said, ‘Now they are all gone, and I can kiss you as much as I like.’ I...wish I could have this flattering dream about Ántonia, but I never [do].” (109) I love Ántonia and her steady independence but I cannot see her in my dreams in…
