Every night the clock struck twelve midnight she had woke up. The loud sounds of heavy wheels moving through the street struck her ears. The laundress had always wondered what was out there. Whereas her husband told her not to look as she heard the sounds. This didn’t stop her from looking. She was determined to figure out what was out there and asked the woman who washed in the tub next her, “what you are hearing is the Army of the Dead. They are Confederate soldiers who died in hospital without knowing that the war was over. the fact her husband told her not to look, she had now looked. As she peered out the window gray fog rolled by. Beyond the fog she heard the sound of lowbred voices, cannons being dragged through the street, ambulances, marching feet and witnessed the shapes of horses. After of what felt like hours for her, she heard a distant blast of a bugle horn that was followed by pure silence.
As indicated, this story is considerably horror story with a mystery that leaves a lot of room for thinking.
Starting from the mysterious sound that woke the laundress every night. Although that was not the only mystery hiding in the story. The laundresses arm had been paralyzed after she left her gaze although I still wonder why. Even though her she was in fear that has nothing to do with her arm paralyzing. The main mystery was why the army men arouse from their grave every night marching through the street. As said in the the story “what you are hearing is the Army of the Dead. They are Confederate soldiers who died in hospital without knowing that the war was over.
