Requirements to Take Exam for CCS-P
First, to explain or identify what a CCS-P is exactly. CCS-P is a Certified Coding Specialist--Physician-based . They are coding practitioners who:
Specialize in many different physician-based settings. Some examples are Physician offices, Group practices, and specialty clinics to name a few.
CCS-Ps review patient records and assign CPT codes for services or procedures and diagnoses codes from ICD-9 CM, they also use the HCPCS Level II for supplies, durable medical equipment etc…
CCS-Ps must have an in-depth knowledge of the CPT coding system and a good working knowledge of use with the ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
They have extensive knowledge in health information documentation, data integrity, quality and know what is needed to stay compliant with HIPPA.
CCS-Ps are invaluable in a provider's business operations because patients' data is entered into claims format and submitted to insurance companies or the government for payment.
Now that we know what a CCS-P is, Listed below are what is stated as being required for taking the certification exam to gain the credentials for this title. As of January 1, 2013, Candidates must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
By Credential: RHIA®, RHIT®, or CCS®; OR
By Education: Completion of a coding training program that includes anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical terminology ,reimbursement methodology, intermediate/advanced ICD diagnostic/procedural and CPT coding; OR
By Experience :Minimum of two (2) years of related coding experience directly applying codes; OR
By Credential with Experience: CCA® plus one (1) year of coding experience directly applying codes; OR
