| REGENCY PERIOD | 1980’s | SOCIAL STANDARDS | * As a time of recreation, men had to ask a woman to dance. It was the only time where both sexes could physically interact outside of their private property. * Modesty and discretion was mandated for both women and men. This included clothing and topics for socialization * Religion played a significant role during this period. Anglicanism was the dominant religion. * Marriage had to take place between to parties of equal social standing. To marry one of lower status was looked down upon. This was the case with Mr. Darcy’s decision to wed Elizabeth Bennet. * It was a time where males dominated literature arts. This could be reflected by the fact that men were given school education if they chose to do so. Females who wanted to write had to have a male pen name. * Females were primarily educated at home by governesses in the fields of home economics and fine arts. This included music, cooking, sewing, painting etc. Mary and Miss. Darcy are both accomplished pianists. * Mannerism played a pivotal role in determining one’s social standing. Wealth didn’t determine all of one’s status. * "Oh, certainly. No woman can be really esteemed accomplished who does not also possess a certain something in her air, in her manner of walking, in the tone of her voice, her address and expressions." (Pride and Prejudice, pg 32 chapter 8)
This illustrates how a Victorian woman was expected to be publicly presentable and polite at all times. How a woman behaved in front of a group of people was how she was judged * Manners/Etiquette was mandated and fairly strict. Females and males both had their own roles to fulfill. * One of lower social status should not greet themself to one of higher social status. Mr. Collins “foolishly” introduced himself to Mr. Darcy. * Success was determined by a man’s wealth and social network. For a woman to gain “success”, she had to marry such a man. Marriage played an important role

Austen presents the women of Regency period as living within a patriarchal society where most women lack power and control. Women were dependent upon the male of the relationship to provide financial security and the exclamatory tone with cumulative listing of bleak words? by Mr Knightley at Box Hill, “[Miss Bates] is poor;…has sunk from comforts;…live to old age…sink more” highlights the severe repercussions on single women if they are not married. Patriarchal values are further depicted through the metaphor in “Boarding school, where…accomplishments were sold at a reasonable price” and the trivialisation “girls…scramble themselves into a little education without any danger of coming back prodigies.” The “accomplishments” are a metaphor for labels put on young women to advertise them as suitable for marriage and the trivialisation reflects the Regency period’s belief that women are not educated to be successful but rather serve well in a household. Furthermore the complaint by Emma, who belongs to the upper…

On April 19, 1995, at 9:02 a.m., the United States of America was reminded that the worst horror often comes from within. Within a matter of days Americans were forced to realize that this terrible tragedy may have been caused by citizens who call themselves patriots. Until the Oklahoma City bombing, Americans generally though of terrorism as a foreign problem that could not invade the walls of this nation. Many Americans had given little thought to what these patriots sought to do. Militia and patriot groups were considered to be fairly harmless groups who enjoyed stirring people up. The vast majority of Americans did not realize how serious or how dangerous these groups actually were. Very few people could understand why a fellow countryman would wreak such havoc on them. When it was learned that the accused suspects in the Oklahoma City bombing allegedly had ties to political extremist groups, citizens started to give these groups a second, closer look. Initially, Austen develops the theme by having love conquer Mr. Darcy’s pride. Mr. Darcy is at first cold and uninterested in the poor, socially inferior Ms. Bennet. He says, “She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me” (Austen 31). He scorns the ball at Meryton, and says it’s a waste of his time (Austen 32). Mr. Darcy’s affections though begin to change after Elizabeth comes to Netherfield Park in order to take care of her sister, Jane. The narrator states at this time, “He really believed, that were it not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger” (Austen 159). Mr. Darcy, surprisingly though, extends an offer of marriage to Elizabeth; He just proposes with the constant mention of how he is of higher standing, in so many ways, and how that this match is against his better judgment. Even while humbling himself to the point of asking a middle class woman to marry him, pride still exudes from his mouth. Ms. Bennet, needless to say, declines. This spurning of his proposal humbles him to the point where he once again asks for her hand, and this time humbly. Austen shows love and affection subduing the proud Mr. Darcy humbling him to the point where he would happily marry a middle class girl of greatly inferior social standing, reputation, and wealth.…
