Nancy Shaw was an 18-year-old in the seventeenth week of her first pregnancy when she was examined by ultrasound at health department clinic. That ultrasound revealed that her fetus had extreme and symmetrical shortening of the limbs. The clinic referred Ms. Shaw to the prenatal diagnosis center of a public hospital. There, Ms. Shaw discussed possible causes of the abnormalities with a genetic counselor. Following that discussion, Ms. Shaw decided to terminate the pregnancy. At that time, amniotic fluid was drawn for analysis. A medical student, John Dutchman, who was present with the attending physician, Dr. Lowland, before and after the termination was surprised to hear the attending physician tell Ms. Shaw that the fetus had been female. Mr. Dutchman had not realized that a woman undergoing an abortion would want this kind of information. If acceptance is achieved through similarity, then is the road to acceptance worth getting lost on; is acceptance worth losing ourselves? A person’s individuality is what makes them who they are, but what about those who aren’t happy with who they are? If a transition between permanent happiness and cheap bursts of it exists, then what compels people to sacrifice their identity for the identity of someone, or something they’re not? Amy Tan’s essay “Fish Cheeks” explains the difficulty of deciphering where the determinant lies between fitting in and forgetting who we are. The main question is: “Is fitting in worth it?”…

This research paper identifies how past racism in America is connected to the current racism that people of color face and experience through oppression and disparities. As a society, we are preoccupied with the idea of perfection. We look up to those in magazines, in sports, and on TV. Our society is essentially one large competition. We compete for everything, whether it be a job, a grade, or a spot on a team. To be competitive is to be human, but we then ask ourselves: how far will we take this need to be superior? Some may draw the line at taking regular, over-the-counter supplements. Others may be willing to risk their health in order to improve their physical appearance as well as performance. Working out and dieting aside, many every-day gym goers, as well as professional athletes, have resorted to taking anabolic-androgen steroids. Anabolic-androgen steroids are a form of synthesized testosterone, the male hormone responsible for muscle growth and male-specific characteristics. However, one expert and his colleagues claims that “approximately one to three million users in the United States have abused the drug” in order to gain the sought-after “edge” over their competition (Sjoqvist 1872).…
