I learned about your lab in the process of researching laboratories online. I have been seeking a lab that is researching areas that I am very much interested in and matches my academic goals in life. I am writing to see whether you would be interested in hiring a research intern this summer.
My name is John Doe and I am a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania. I am pursuing a BA in Biology. I am considering an eventual career in research or academic medicine. I am extremely interested in the research you are conducting and was initially intrigued by the subject matter during my exposure to the topic in my studies. In particular, I am interested in [something about their lab/research].
I have experience in clinical research, as I am currently working at the Center at the University of Pennsylvania. I am conducting clinical research and am in the process of authoring a paper to be submitted for publication. Although I do not have particular laboratory experience at a research lab, I have taken and am currently taking laboratory classes in Chemistry and Biology where I have been exposed to many laboratory research methods and have gained many laboratory skills. Additionally, I am a quick learner, I love to learn, and I can think critically. I am a hard worker and I will make sure to complete all the work efficiently, diligently, meticulously, and to the best of my abilities. I hope to make a significant contribution to your lab this summer. Furthermore, getting paid is not a deciding factor for me; therefore, I would not mind working without pay.
I would be honored to work in your lab this summer. I will be available to work as many hours a week as needed this upcoming summer. I would welcome the opportunity to talk to you to discuss the possibility of interning there. My résumé is attached to this email. Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
John Doe
