THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
INTRODUCTION:
What is self-esteem? Self-Esteem means different things to different people. There is no universal meaning in self-esteem. Everyone of us have a personal meaning of self-esteem. How does self-esteem affect in our personality? How we overcome self-esteem? And how self-esteem developed in self?
Self-esteem is a term used in psychology to reflect persons overall emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of one self as well as an attitude toward the self. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs ( for example, “ I am competent”, “I am worthy”) and emotions such as triumph,despair,pride and shame. There is a saying “The self concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it.” Self-esteem is also known as the evaluative dimensions of the self that includes feelings of worthiness, pride and discouragement.
Self-esteem, fully realized, is the awareness that we are equal to the obstacles place in front of us. Self-esteem is confidence in our ability to think, confidence in our ability to cope with the basic challenges of life, and confidence in our right to be successful and happy. People with appropriate levels of self-esteem are assured in the right to feel worthy, enjoy the fruits of their efforts, and assert their needs and wants.
Experiences in a person’s life are a major source of self-esteem development. The positive or negative life experience one has, creates attitudes toward the self which can be favorable and develop positive feelings of self-worth, or can be unfavorable and develop negative feelings of self worth. In the early years of child’s life, parents are the most significant influence on self-esteem and the main source of positive or negative experiences a child will have.
