What is Gleaners Food Bank? Gleaners Food Bank is a non-profit organization that helps raise food for families all over the Detroit areas of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe and Livingston. Altogether, that is 300,000 children just in the Detroit Metro area alone. Everyday more and more children are becoming hungry and there’s nothing that their moms and dads can do for them. With the help from Gleaners Food Bank the families that are in need can come and shop in the pantry for whatever food or household products that they are in need for. Families go to Gleaners for all different reasons. Having money issues of being less fortunate than other families isn’t always the case. The workers and volunteers come across and experienced many different people and situations that have been very eye opening to every single one of them. They noticed that there would often be nice looking women or men that will come in to shop at the pantry. That man or women would be all put together on the outside, drive a nice car and have all the nice clothes, but there’s always stories to go behind each story. That family could have a handicapped child that could be eating away at all their money so now the barely have enough for food. Or the husband or wife could have just been laid off from their job that they have had forever or a major pay cut was taken at work. The workers at Gleaners aren’t allowed to assume just because on the outside of the person. Because everything could be falling apart.
Of course a few times employees had ask a couple of shoppers to not return back to the pantry and find a new one to go to because they felt that they weren’t being completely honest with the chance they were given. Some shoppers were caught stealing food and even taking other shoppers carts while their groceries were being bagged. When this would happen the shoppers were written kind letters being asked to not return
