Mad Cow Disease
Mad cow disease is a neurological disorder of cattle that can be transmitted to humans. In humans, mad cow disease is known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. This scientific term for the disease was named after two of the doctors who described its symptoms for the first time. In cattle, this disease is referred to as Bovine Spongiform Encepholopathy and causes sponge like destruction of brain.

affecting the central nervous system of cattle. Consumption of beef products from infected animal is believed to be the cause of disease in the human. This disease mostly affects people above the age of 65 years. It is usually fatal after six months of the appearance of symptoms.
Cause of Mad Cow Disease
Cause of mad cow disease is considered to be associated to modification or conformational change of normal cell surface protein which is called prion protein. Reasons behind this conformational change are not known. This disease is incurable and fatal in cattle. The infected cattle lose its control to perform normal things like walking and hence the disease is named as mad cow.
The disease affects the nervous system of the cattle badly including brain and spinal cord.
Disease infecting cattle can also affect other animals like goats and sheep. The disease can show early signs in humans as compared to cattle.
Symptoms of Mad Cow Disease
In cattle, symptoms of mad cow disease may appear slowly. These symptoms are infectious to other species including humans. An odd change in activity and attitude are usually the first symptoms of mad cow disease in cattle. Later on, cattle start becoming increasingly uncoordinated and have problems in performing simple movements, such as standing and walking. A noticeable decrease in weight may be experienced as one of the symptoms. Symptoms of mad cow disease become worse until cattle dies.
Symptoms in Humans
Humans infected from cattle suffered from mad cow disease experience symptoms, such as emotional disturbances, severe jerks, change in personality and even madness. Even in humans, symptoms continue until they fall into a coma and then die. Humans usually suffer from symptoms like depression, anxiety and other psychiatric symptoms. In humans, symptoms of mad cow disease include the
following:
• Memory loss
• Rapidly progressive dementia
• Death
• Emotional instability
• An unsteady gait
