My Sister’s Keeper revolves mainly around a thirteen year old girl by the name of Anna Fitzgerald. Anna came into this world in a very unique manner. She was specifically designed to match the rare blood type of her sister Kate. Her parents where insisted my doctors that this would be in the best interest of Kate who was suffering. The day Anna was born, doctors would draw blood from her umbilical cords to donate to Kate. And every time after that when Kate was sick, Anna would have to donate stem cells, bone marrow, and blood. This wasn’t something that was easily done. Anna suffered a lot of pain for Kate and she was never entitled to do this. She was a child and her parents were putting her through all this pain …show more content…
to help her dying sister live. She was put on this earth to save her sister. This gives no meaning to Anna’s life and she would eventually stick up for herself, or so people would think she was sticking up for herself. While this was happening she knew nothing of this. She didn’t know what was going on or what her parents were doing to her was wrong.
Eventually Kate would need an organ donation from Anna.
Anna decides that she would refuse to donate her kidney and resorts to legal help. Anna finds a lawyer who is willing to help her solely on the fact of what her parents were doing was wrong. Anna files for medical emancipation. Medical emancipation of a minor is where the individual is no longer restricted to the wishes of their parents and may make their own decision regarding a variety of topics. If it were up to Anna’s parents she would donate her kidney to her sister Kate. Anna stood up for what she thought was right and what she believed in. It was not because she was trying to be selfish or because she was jealous of all the attention Kate was getting from her parents. It was because she had lived her whole life for Kate. She was finally at the age where she made sense of what was going on. She didn’t want to be put on this earth to only help her sister. She wanted to be able to have her own destiny. She wanted to play with friends, play sports and she wasn’t allowed because her parents were too afraid of her getting hurt and not being able to donate to Kate. What her parents were doing to her was depriving her of a childhood. In my opinion it was completely unethical and wrong. I have a daughter of my own and I’m not sure I would take the same measures as the parents did. I love my daughter just as much, but I don’t feel that you should defy nature. Nature has its plan set out for everyone. God has
a plan for everyone and no one should try to outsmart him. I think this is what Anna and Kate’s parents were trying to do. They were trying to outsmart God’s plan for Kate, and instead they were sucking the life out of Anna. I think that the theme of death in this film is portrayed as something that can never happen. Kate’s mother is in constant denial of her daughter’s condition. She doesn’t want to believe that Kate’s life is almost over. You can’t blame her mother for trying to find every possible way to keep her alive, but it comes to a point where you need to realize and make the best of the last moments you spend with you dying loved one. Many people believe that the quality of life is extremely important. Kate did not have great quality of life toward the end of the movie. She was stuck in a bed and was in constant pain. Making sure our dying loved one’s are comfortable and happy is extremely important for your grievance. We want to remember them as being peaceful and not in pain. I really enjoyed this book even though I cried for hours after it.
Thank you so much for recommending this movie. It was great!
