1. Pandora’s Box - http://myths.e2bn.org/mythsandlegends/textonly562-pandoras-box.html
Summary: Epimetheus and Prometheus were two brothers who annoyed one of the most powerful Gods, Zeus. Because of Zeus’ annoyance, we punished all humans by taking away their ability to create fire. However, Prometheus rebelled, went to a blacksmith named Hephaestos, and stole his fire. Zeus became very angry and came up with a harsher punishment for all humans. He made a girl out of clay, named her Pandora, and sent her to Epimetheus. They married, and, as a wedding gift, Zeus gave Pandora a box. However, Pandora was told to never open the box. Ever. She became very, very curious and one day, she could not take it any longer. She opened the box and out poured disease, poverty, and all things bad. She closed the box and then heard the box calling her name again. She opened it once more and out flew a dragonfly of hope.

2. Medusa

Medusa thought that she was the most beautiful person in the world. She was conceited. She often looked into the mirror and boasted about herself. She compared herself to everyone else in Athens and told them that she looks better than they do. One day, Medusa and her friends went to a Greek temple, the Parthenon. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, lived there. All around the Parthenon were statues of Greek gods and goddesses that Medusa thought would look even better if she was the statue. Later Medusa said, “My this is a beautiful temple. It is a shame it is wasted on Athena for I am much prettier she is, perhaps one day people will build an even grander temple to my beauty.” Athena then punished her for speaking out against her by turning her hair into snakes and her body into a snake. If Medusa was to ever look into a mirror, she would turn into stone, and, if someone else looked at Medusa, they were turned into stone. Medusa was then sent to the end of the Earth with the blind monsters and the gorgon

Prometheus was a Titan from Greek mythology. He sided with the gods and created humans out of clay without Zeus’ approval. After Zeus discovered that Prometheus was creating humans, he decided to punish Prometheus by prohibiting him from teaching the ways of civilization to man. This made Athena chose to convince her father Zeus to teach Prometheus so that he would teach man. Zeus became furious with the actions of man and Prometheus. This made Zeus conclude that it was forbidden for the gods to give fire to man. Prometheus was upset from Zeus’ proclamation, which made him decide that he was going to bring fire to humanity. Prometheus entered Olympus cautiously to steal hot burning coals, which he placed in a fennel stalk to prevent anyone from finding out. With his success, he reached his destination of man and presented the gift of fire. The Greek mythology of Pandora’s box may not be well known among many, let alone its raison d'être. Pandora was sent to Earth by Zeus with a locked box and was ordered never to open it. It turns out that she opened the box and out flew the embodiment of worldly troubles (i.e. sickness, worry, crime, envy, etc.). Pandora became upset at the chaos she had released into the world, until she saw one that had remained, and this was Hope. This legend explains the existence of evil and more importantly, the promise of hope in times of darkness.…

She explains throughout her poem, "Muse as Medusa," that her power resides in Medusa since Sarton's creativity is inspired by her. Sarton's gaze is focused on Medusa in her poetry, which Audre Lorde expands by depicting that the power grounded by Medusa created Sarton's ability to look deeply and put it into words. Theresa de Lauretis explains that the power of Medusa, as a feminist icon, is portrayed through images on screen and is normally eradicated to symbolize the capture of women's control. The power of Medusa is encompassed through the gaze she attains, ‘to be looked at,' which gives power to those who use Medusa's power in poetry, cinema, etc. The power of looking is the significance to individuality. It forces the self to remake the gaze to achieve…

Prometheus was the kindest of all the Titans or even the gods, but one day, Zeus ordered that everyone was forbidden to interact with the humans. Prometheus could not stand to see humans- let alone anything- suffer and to watch them go extinct because Zeus threw a fit, so he gave the humans fire in order to live. When Zeus found out about it, he became enraged and killed him a hundred times, then chained the titan to a large tree, only to watch mankind. Then, as he was not satisfied, Epimetheus’ story comes into place: Zeus asked Athena to make him a daughter, and after she did so, he called her Pandora, and offered her as a wife to Prometheus’ brother. After he accepted, Zeus gave them a beautiful box as a wedding gift, which had a note that read “DO NOT OPEN” which was obeyed for many months. One day while her husband was not home, Pandora’s curiosity got the best of her, so she opened it, and all the terrible things in the world flew out, no matter how fast she closed it. Famine, disease, murder, and much more flew out of the box, making her sad. But following everything, a small bug crawled out of the box, and smiled at the woman. The bug was named…

In the novel “Mythology” by Edith Hamilton, The Story of Niobe is a good example of pride that led to destruction. The myth begins with Niobe a mother of fourteen children who had the audacity to compare herself to a goddess. Boasting on the fact that she gave birth to fourteen children while the goddess Leto only bore two children Apollo the god of the sun and Athena the goddess of wisdom. Offended by Niobe’s arrogance the goddess Leto sends both of her children to bring destruction upon Niobe’s children and misery to Niobe. All seven of Niobe’s boys and girls were completely slaughtered and Niobe herself was transformed into a petrified rock that perpetually weeps as a punishment by the gods for her pride in herself.…

Pandora was created in Mount Olympus out of earth and water; she is defined as endowed with everything and is the name of the first woman on the earth. She was described as charming and beautiful and characterized as mischievous and foolish. Many gods and goddesses gave her gifts, she was given; curiosity, boldness, grace, desire, beauty, a sweet singing voice and a soul. Revenge is the key word to use as for why Pandora was created. By showing that the human experience today is not new and the strong find a way to navigate through the difficult and challenging times, the stories can offer hope and strength and support to a child’s own personal challenges, hopes, and demons. The myths mentioned in the analysis below take the human experience from creation with Gaea and Ouranos to war and survival with Zeus. The gods are shown to be much the same as humans. Zeus, for example, is depicted as a massive being, but human in looks. In fact, all of the major gods are human-looking while the monsters, who often represent human weaknesses, are described otherwise. The gods experience the same passions and flaws of…

    J. J. Abrams compares/contrast Roland Barthes' two codes for creating suspense hermeneutic and proairetic by explaining how each film has multiple “mystery boxes”. The “mystery box” is a combination of the hermeneutic and proairetic codes. He mentions that there is always question of who, what, how, and what happens next, which create suspense to keep the audience drawn into the story. His example was from Star Wars, the droid, R2-D2, who meets mysterious women, the audience does not know, that is one “mystery box”. Next Luke Skywalker finds the droid, it’s a hologram with a message, and the princess needs help from Obi-Wan Kenobi, well who is Obi-Wan Kenobi, which is another “mystery box”. In terms on how to influence the audience to care about the story, Abrams explains the TV five act structure. The first…
