The loss of the beloved Princess Diana was one that saddened countless people world wide, although nearly everyone was affected in some way by this tragedy, some handled it with more sympathy and caution than others. Some were blood relatives of the princess, some had only briefly known her, some had never met her in their lives but still felt that they had lost a loved one, there were even people who didn’t know much about her or her life at all, regardless of anyone’s unique relationship with the Princess everyone was affected in some way. There were many articles written and speeches given directly after the death, but not one was exactly like another. The way that each specific person spoke of the passing of the princess …show more content…
had a lot to do with their location in the world, how well they did or did not know the Princess, and how much respect they had for the situation and the people involved.
Immediately after the car accident that killed the Princess there was a news report released that listed the details of the crash, commentary from members of the family, and briefly spoke of the possible cause of the crash.
This news article was written to inform the people of England of what had happened and fill them in on what little information was available to the public at that time. The speaker or the author of this article affects the text slightly but it is mostly factual evidence, not very much bias is shown through this piece of writing. One indication that the speaker did in fact affect the text in one way or another is the statement “While it was not time for recriminations there was no doubt the press had played a part in her death” even though the author left it at that brief statement, it is understood that the author knows that it is too soon to be pointing fingers at who caused the tragedy, but rather focus on the loss of a wonderful woman. The audience affected the content of this article greatly, the purpose of this paper was to inform the people, without the citizens urge for immediate information there would be no need for this article to be written. When the author gives direct quotes from the family, such as “The queen …show more content…
and the Prince of Wales were ‘deeply shocked and distressed’” it is obvious that the audience has an impact over the writing. The fact that that the author inserts specific quotes into the passage for the audiences benefit works in his or her favor in this type of literature because the audience is who they strive to draw in. The subject of this article affects the text the most significantly in this case; the author is expected to write with more sympathy and compassion than normal, given the topic and circumstances. When the author wrote “Hundreds of mourners have gathered at the Princesses London home” it is evident that the subject of the article is influencing the writing greatly. This news article was extremely affective in delivering the facts and some personal information and leaving it at that. Some may argue that the article was too impersonal but in this case that may have been the best possible way to go. Although this article is considered more factual than anything, there were many that were extremely personal and opinionated.

Weeks after the accident Queen Elizabeth gave a televised speech to address what happened, bring light to some positive memories of the Princess and to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and words.
The speaker, being her mother in law, had a huge impact on the textual content of the passage. When she says “I admire and respect her, for her energy and commitment to others” it is quite obvious that she was very found of the princess and that shows in her speech. The fact that she has such love for the Princess brought a very sentimental feel to the speech and touched many of the other people who felt the same way for her. The audience affected the text in the sense that Queen Elizabeth knew that the majority of the people listening to her speech would be mourning her death just as she was and they would be feeling the same way she did, when she said “we have all felt those emotions the last few days” it is obvious that she feels her entire audience feels just as much hurt as she does. This makes the audience feel like the speech is more personal than if she had not added those comments. The subject again, affects the piece of text the most greatly. It is not uncommon for the Queen to give a speech addressing all of the people of England, but the circumstances obviously affect not only the context of the speech but the tone in which she delivers it. The lines “So what I say to you now, as a queen and as a grandmother, I say from my heart” make it obvious that this is not
just any speech. The speech was very effective at addressing the masses with a heartfelt message that left everyone remembering Princess Diana for the happy life she led. Some argue that the speech was very short and may not have been her sincerest efforts, but I believe that giving a speech after something so terrible would be very difficult and she handled it wonderfully. Queen Elizabeth was the first of many of the princesses close family members to give moving speeches after the accident.
On September 6th Earl Spencer, her brother gave a moving speech which really just focused on all of the positive aspects of Princess Diana’s life, heart, and sole. The fact that the speaker, her brother, was so close with her and understood her better than most people had a lot to do with the way the speech was written and spoken. When he says “Diana was the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty” it is clear that he is speaking highly of her not because he knows he should but because he truly believes it. The audience does have an effect on the speech, in the sense that he wants everyone to see his sister the way he saw her, when he says “Diana remained a very insecure person” you see that he saw her as selfless and humble and he wants others to view her that way too. In this specific case the subject does affect the text but not as much as in the other passages. The way Earl speaks of the Princess leads me to believe that he thinks and speaks highly of her regardless of the circumstances. “These were days I would always remember, as if I had been transported back to our childhood” this quote makes it obvious that they were close even at a young age, and that he had always cared for her. Earl’s speech was extremely affective at touching the hearts of the audience with his kind words about his sister. Some argue that his speech was for sympathy, but it is apparent by the way he speaks about her that his words came from the heart. This was one of the more genuine passages that came of the death of the Princess; others took a more harsh approach.
On September 15th 2006 there was a Wikipedia article written about the death of Diana, this articles purpose is to inform someone searching Princess Diana of the details

of her death. In this article the speaker does not affect the text. This is completely factual and not one bit opinionated, the entire article as a whole is proof of this, with its lack of personal bias or side comments on any matter. It is good that this article stays this way because when people research things its good to get a completely fact based opinion with no bias. The audience affects the text because the author knows that anyone searching on Wikipedia is looking for only facts. The subject does not affect the text because no matter what you search on that website you are going to find articles exactly like this one, the way it was written had nothing to do with the death of Princess Diana specifically. This article was extremely affective at giving a legitimate answer with no fluff or bias opinion. Some may say that some opinion is okay in cases like these, but I believe everyone deserves a chance to make up their own mind.
It is very important to recognize the relationships between, speaker, audience, and the subject, because you may not realize it when you’re reading but they all go hand in hand and any of them can make or break an article or speech. I think that the most rhetorically effective was the first news article, because it did its job completely by giving just the facts when necessary and adding its own specific commentary when needed. My thesis was correct because each different article or speech was greatly affected by not only the author’s relationship with the audience but their relationship with the subject.
