In 2004, Sia released her second album 'Colour the Small One' in Australia and in Europe.
Sia's international success came after her song 'Breathe Me' was featured in the HBO series finale 'Six Feet Under' in 2005. Alan Ball, who was the creator and writer-director of the show explained in an interview that he specifically wrote the ending scene to fit Sia's song. Sia began to tour across the US and all over Europe promoting her album. Furler has had several successful albums released years later. However, the fame, the touring, and the death of her boyfriend still weighted heavy on her that she decide to write songs for other artists. As a songwriter, Sia has written successful hits for Rihanna, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, David Guetta, Ne-yo, to name a few. Today, Sia is one of the most credible
songwriters. The song 'Breathe Me' is an emotionally powerful and incredible vulnerable song. The song is about depression, self destruction whether it may be emotionally or physically, and the cry for help. Sia wrote 'Breathe Me' as a way to cope with the loss of her fiancé. In a recent Howard Stern interview, Sia explains that she was in the lowest point in her life in which she turned to narcotics and alcohol to help her cope with every day's challenge. "Help, I have done it again/I have been here many times before/Hurt myself again today/And the worst part is there's no one else to blame". The first stanza of the song can be interpreted as someone who may have hurt themselves physically and admits that they only have themselves to blame for the current stage they are in. "Be my friend, hold me/Wrap me up, unfold me/I am small, and needy/Warm me up and breathe me". In the second stanza, the writer states to need immediate help, being vulnerable within themselves, but mostly in need of comfort and to help heal their wounds. "Wrap me up" may be implied as someone who has cut or hurt themselves and is in need to be wrapped up in order to stop the bleeding. "Breathe me" in the song may signify to understand them, wrap yourself in their World to understand, and need them in general. "Ouch, I have lost myself again/Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found/Yeah, I think that I might break/Lost myself again, and I feel unsafe". In the last stanza, the writer describes to damaging themselves once again. It may mean physically but emotionally, and mentally as well. The person no longer recognizes themselves or why they continue to damage themselves. They are in their breaking point of committing a permanent change such as suicidal and no longer feel safe within themselves. It is the breakdown of the self.
