They had an extremely high number of laws, and even more extreme punishments to go with the them. King Hammurabi’s Code made Babylon a more organized, and law abiding place to live. I think if I lived in their society, I would also feel some sense of protection. I wouldn’t think someone would want to harm me, because if they did so, they would most likely be sent to death. I know that I definitely would not do anything that would put me in the position to be sentenced to death, or even pay a large amount of money to someone. Death was obviously the biggest punishment that they faced. The also could end up paying a large amount of money, and this could be very bad, since some people didn’t have the money to pay. I do think that their punishments are too harsh. Almost everything resulted in death, or paying large amounts of money. The punishments ranged from cruelty. For instance, if you broke a someone’s bone who you were equal to, then your bone shall also be broken, but if you break a slaves bone, then you shall pay only half of what the slave is worth. I think this law isn’t fair because you commit the same crime, you just didn’t commit it to the same person. In our society today, if a man was to steal, he would be put in jail. If a man stole in their society, they were put to death. Even though I think these punishments were extreme, I think that King Hammurabi got his point across, and their crime rate most likely went down. At the time their punishments didn’t seem as harsh to them, because that’s just how things got solved then. As you can see, the Hammurabi Code played a huge role in the Babylonian Society, and in my opinion bettered their society. Although some of the laws and the punishments were probably a little overboard, I still think that their society improved, and King Hammurabi should be given the amount of credit deserved for making the laws. If anything, the laws definitely changed the society
