What was it like in the 1960’s? It certainly was different, yet there are a lot of similarities. Most people see the sixties as bell bottoms, raised shirts, and peace. Maybe in the late sixties but definitely not in it’s earlier years. Let’s rewind back to the early sixties and see the similarities and differences of fashion, racism, and governments. First of all, fashion was also a big topic in the sixties, and it still is. For many years racism has been around, for being part of a certain religion or particular race. As an example on page 56 of While The World Watched, it addresses the fateful day in Birmingham, Alabama.When the Klu Klux Klan [KKK] bombed the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church on September 15, 1963, it affected the whole world. Stunned and sickened, President Roosevelt realized how bad racism had gotten. “There has been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation.” This is what Martin Luther King Jr, but it didn’t change some of the whites views on the damage they were actually doing. Some people [whites] were celebrating the loss of those four young lives. As you can see racism was and still is a problem. Yet, blacks {or any race that is discriminated against] are still discriminated, not to the extent of the sixties, but some still have those views. the KKK does not simply exist as a phantom of our country's racist past; it is an active organization that still exerts influence in the twenty first century.
