Thomas Paine was a very big influential figure involved in the American independence movement, he was said to have made the way for the Declaration of Independence. In Paine’s “The Crisis”, he talks about 3 major points. The first is he views America in the position of being a slave to Britain still. Secondly, Thomas Paine states that the Middle Colonies had the most “Tories”, those who were still loyal to Britain, present in their colony. Finally, Paine argues that Americans must be the victors in the war being fought in order to secure America’s independence.
Thomas Paine was born January 29, 1737 to an Anglican Mother and a Quaker Father. Tomas did not get much of a formal education, but he knew the basic things like reading, writing, and math. He started to work with his father and made corsets at the age of 13. Paine had also done many other jobs like hunting smugglers, and collection liquor and tobacco taxes. However, he was not very good at any of these jobs. To add to his hardships, Paine’s wife and child both died while in childbirth in 1760. 12 years later, he had written his first of many articles, “The Case of the Officers of Excise”. This article was rejected majorly by the members of Parliament and other citizens, because his outlook in this article was said to be “bleak.”
