Resilience Essay Examples
“Resilience is all about being able to over come the unexpected. Sustainability is about survival. The goal of resilience is to thrive” this is a quote by Jambs Cascio. There have been many times that we have all had something unexpectedly happen to us. We have all over came those obstacles and have been able to move on and look forward to the positive future. I thought I lost my arm, when I was attacked by a dog. My unexpected day all started in the summer of my first grade year. I was enjoying a nice hot sunny day. I was shooting hoops in my driveway and heard someone shout my name! “Hey Gavin, do you want to go on the slip n slide?” “ Absolutely!” I shouted back to my neighbor in an exciting voice. I could barely hold in my exciting …show more content…
We got to the doctors office and all I can remember is getting a shot in my arm that felt like getting stung by hundreds of bees and receiving 13 stitches. I only had one worried concern that I kept thinking to my self about and that was if I could play in my baseball game later that night. “Will this make me miss my baseball game tonight?” I asked the doctor. “Well…you really should not play tonight but if you wrap your arm nice and tight, you should be able to play.” Hearing those words from the doctor was a huge relief because baseball is my favorite sport and I wouldn't want to miss playing in that game. After the doctor finished the final details and called in my prescriptions; I was free to go home. I remember going home and taking a pretty long nap; then getting ready for my baseball game, that I would never want to miss. We have all had to “over come the unexpected” at some point in our lives but from that we have all became better people. We have learned that it is possible to still have positive thoughts even though at one point, we did not think that positive thoughts even

Many times in life there are obstacles that some people are unable to overcome, yet there are some people who have the ability to overcome these obstacles in life. In Jeannette Walls’ memoir, The Glass Castle, tells us about a girl who was in poverty with a father that was very paranoid and logical, and a mother who is free-spirited. Even though she went through hardships she was still able to learn lessons, and was able to push forward to become a remarkable author. Although human resilience has multiple definitions, I believe it is the ability to keep pressing forward because in the book The Glass Castle Jeanette Walls pushed through obstacles to become a famous author.…

But hey, just look on the bright side. I mean it’s always darkest before the dawn. If you dream it, you can do it. Watch. No? Oh well. America today is decidedly and unwaveringly optimistic, we are positive thinkers. Positive thinking is defined by one of its leading advocates, Dr. Charlene Proctor as “the process of choosing positive emotions to create an outlook that translates into a new or better-chosen reality.” In short, our thoughts and attitude can affect the course of the outside world, so we should strive to be positive to reap positive outcomes, while stifling negativity for the opposite reason. We praise the optimist while shunning the pessimist. But the question is does every cloud have a silver lining? In order to show positive thinking as the dangerous paradigm that it is we will first examine the causes of positive thinking, move onto its effects, and then finally round out with solutions.…

If we did not have optimism, we would wind up looking at temporary setbacks as unscalable, permanent obstacles. When we don’t have any hope, there is no reason to work hard, to push forward, and to try again. But instead, it is really easier to give up, to give in, and to make do with what is already there.…

    Philosophy Of Resilience

Resilience has a different meaning to different people. Personally, I view resilience as a preventative approach as a result of inflicted threats. The concept affects the entire ecosystem which is outlined by Urie Bronfenbrenner; from the individual to the Macrosystem. The determination of resilient practices depends on the context in which it occurs. Historically, resilience has been labeled as a deficit-based approach to overcoming adversity (Masten, 2001). Today, researchers and other professionals recognize resilience is more effective when applied through strengths-based approaches reassuring potential to “overcome” and “succeed”. Through “compassion” and “respect” resilience can be achieved.…

When these moments in life hit, people see them as barriers, unable to be broken down. However, there is a point when an individual demonstrates their true qualities or characteristics, which would not have come to light unless an adversity had risen. Adversities can allow individuals to view the world in a new perspective due in part to their hard work, though this is not always the case as the pressure may become to intense for some individuals to conquer.…

Resiliency is an important aspect of recovery in populations that experience adversity. Many experts and professionals have similar working definitions of resilience (Astier, Almedom, & Douglas; 2007; Cowden, Kobayashi, and Mellman, 2014; Eschleman, Bowling, & Alacron, 2010; Funk, 1992; Schaubroeck, Riollo, Peng, & Spain, 2001), which highlight the complexity of the word. The ability to return to a state of well-being and face adversity as a challenge instead of an overwhelming mountain unable to be scaled because of prior trauma is a challenging…

I was soon released from the hospital, and allowed to go home. It is impossible to forget the lousy car ride home. It hurt to sit up straight, so I laid down in the backseat of my mom’s Ford Explorer, and proceeded to watch a movie. By the time I got home, my back was killing me. I was forced to stay on our couch for the next few days, and needed help walking and showering, since I was not allowed to do anything to harm the stitches placed in both of the open wounds.…

Life is fraught with challenges to be overcome and obstacles to experience, and from the start we must learn how to bounce back from those challenges and obstacles. In Anna Harrington’s article, “Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way”, she defines resilience in a number of facets and argues that resilience is key to conquering life successfully. She states that resilience, or the art of bouncing back, is not about struggling in isolation, but about using and mobilizing normal human processes such as coping. (Harrington, 2012)…
