Respect and Natural Occurring Instinct
nythingNow that is a very distant word isn't it? or is it a word? Do people take respect as a word or more as an 'idea'? Respect is not an idea that must be taught nor must it be learned, but an idea that was given to us by he [whoever that might be] who has created us! Respect is a natural occurring instinct that is fading away as time passes through us. From the very first man to walk the earth to what is what we call society now, respect remains the same. I for one am not fond of this change at all. The difference of our point of view of respect and what people tens of thousands of years ago is obvious. Back then a man would challenge another and give fair opportunities to fight with no cheap shots, the surviving man would still respect the man for his valiant efforts and would offer proper burial. Today a man would take any opportunity he had to kill another, no fair fight at all, and when he did kill the man, he would let him rot and decay with the rats. A man back then will die with honor and for his country, while today a man will try to avoid death. Yes yes respect is the same because we still have people that die for the country they protect and those are called soldiers. Now even in America, have we lost respect for these men and women who gave their lives honorably. Why laugh and giggle when our national anthem plays? Why talk? Why make noises and try to be funny? Because our respect is fading! Ask yourself...does it make you feel good to be the attention star of the moment while you mock those who have died for this country, to protect the land in which we live on! Is that moment worth the mockery of thousands of lives? What has todays society become? Many people think they should be respected and do not have to show any respect at all. Has greed poisoned us that far? When you hear "respect your elders" does that give the elders an excuse to disrespect the youth? No. It does not. I'm tired of this one way stream of respect. Respect is not a river but a

As employees we have all felt the differences between respect amongst our co-workers. This can be real or imagined but nearly all of us, at some time, have felt this emotion. This mostly occurs when management puts forth an heir of self-importance or simply treats its employees indifferently(Pierce & Newstrom, 2011, p. 118). This benign treatment of employees lowers morale, causes poor work performance, and can cause internal strife within a business(Pierce & Newstrom, 2011, p. 118). It should be avoided at all costs as to better the company.…

Honor in the past is very different from now. Alexander Welsh said,”In the early 17th century [...]upperclassmen in Europe and the United States regularly engaged in duels on ‘fields of honor’ to defend their manhood”(Welsh. What is Honor?). Honor in the past is incredibly contrasting to one another. In the beginning of the 17th century men would duel each other to defend their glory. Honor now is mostly about social life; do you party or stay home?, are you single or in a relationship?, etc. Honor now is based on what you have or haven’t done and if it was ‘wild’ or not.…

    The Moral Instinct

A journalist of The New York Times Magazine by the name of Steven Pinker published an article titled, “The Moral Instinct.” The purpose of the article was to discuss morality and the questions and speculations around it. In the article, Pinker suggests that our moral goodness is just in our minds and is there to help us decide between what is right and wrong. He says that our moral goodness isn’t just an opinion-based conclusion, whether we favor or disfavor something. To Pinker, morality makes us feel like we have a purpose to live, and that that purpose solely comes from our loved ones. Pinker goes on to talk more about morality and poses many claims; claims that I have found very interesting. In further study of this article, particularly the claims Pinker brought up, I found some interesting texts that extend and complicate Pinker’s arguments as well as stimulate my thoughts about morality.…

Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. Respect, especially in the Army is a very important value to live by. It is much more than just talking kindly and listening to someone. It is the process of taking into consideration someone’s emotions, feelings and needs. You must also focus on their ideas, thoughts, and preferences. It is showing someone that you value their time; that you care what they have to say. Showing someone respect allows that person to know and acknowledge that you are tracking them and that you comprehend and believe in what they are saying, It is important to allow someone to feel your respect for them. It will ease the conversation and create trust. Behavior and attitude will allow the person demanding respect to feel that respect. When we respect each other, there are fewer conflicts. People get along easier and avoid the un-necessary drama associated with a lack of respect. For those of us in the military, this is very important.…

    In search of respect

As I read in search of respect I quickly realize that this book is very interesting. The statistics and details given early in the preface and introduction set the platform to hear the voices of the people who will be featured in this book. This book was written by an ethnographer which is a person who lives in the communities they study and establish long term relationships with the people they write about. As I read chapter one I began to fear for the authors life! To actually read the details of the drug dealers he dealt with and him going back there after being somewhat threatened was too much for me. But in the same sentence to hear the same man(Ray) being described as a sensitive man is insane. I understand why the author was hesitant to write this book as in you may look down on these people not understanding that they are still people.…

    Honor Definition Essay

In a book written by Samuel Johnson in 1755 he defines honor as "nobility of soul, magnanimity, and a scorn of meanness” (Johnson). People may say that this still applies today in the modern world because honor could be staying the same while the people are what is changing. Conversely, this isn’t true because honor has just changed through time, but it has also changed between cultures. With this in mind honor has never been one definition. In an article written by a journalist from New York The Sun, Shalin Punn about James Bowman and his book Honor: A History, he states “honor still exists in more developed forms, in "honor groups," like the "family or the military," where we do have a "code" of honor which creates a "mini-honor culture”(Bowman). In other words he says that honor exists in a more developed form, changing over time. Furthermore honor may be based off of an idea, but it has been developing over time into something…
