Respect Fair Observation Report
On September 16, I was invited to volunteer at the Respect Fair. I was excited to assist the health promotion office since the last time I volunteered with everyone was in August. Therefore, I was more than willing to utilize my free time to assist Ku’ulei and Blane, especially since I was provided a free t-shirt!
Once I finished class at 11:15, I went to campus center courtyard. As I was walking down the grand staircase, I was completely unaware of where our table was located. Thus, I walked to the area in front of the gym where there were numerous people wearing the same black shirt. The area immediately caught my attention due to its business. As I walked along the side, I saw Women’s Center, LGBT, and several other familiar faces, yet no one from the health promotion office. I looked around the courtyard and eventually found Blane and Ku’ulei underneath the large white tent, behind the Marsy’s Law table.
I thought that the location was terrible, especially since I could not find

Therefore, I spent the majority of the fair running the table by myself. Even without supervision, the students were polite and they never approached the table as a group. Therefore, I never felt overwhelmed. As a student walked up to our table, I would have them spin the wheel of wellness. Once the wheel stopped and the arrow pointed to a category, I would read them one of the pre-made questions. These questions were incredibly interesting and generated conversation with the students. After the game, I would inform them about the services held at the health promotion office and encourage them to take any of the brochures that interest them. I was surprised that numerous students took a brochure, which made me elated since it displays the student’s desire to change a behavior or learn more about what they can

A beautiful part of the event was the display of some of the lives that have been touched by the Phoenix Emergency Dental Pros. The pictures and background story of the patients were shown to the audience. It gave every emergency dentist in the room a solid reason to know that they are truly making a difference. The slideshow ran for about 15 minutes and it was time…

Some really effective moments when we worked as a team was when we had to organise the fish and chips and when we had to set up for the quiz night, we all stuck together and set up the hall in under an hour. I think that at the end of the event once we had counted how much we had raised, we all felt proud of ourselves at what we had achieved and this really showed as we were excited to let our guests know how much they had helped us and the charity.…

My children and I volunteered to help set up the facility for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

Sunday is the main events so the runners for the half and full marathon came in to retrieve their information packets, and shirts which they will wear during each run. Before I was assigned to work with a few other ladies behind the Shirt Distribution stand, the staff explained to all the volunteers about the water pouches that will be available to use during the events, and briefly demonstrated how the new water pouches worked, and how we should hold the water for the runners as the passed by. At the Shirt Distribution stand, we handed out long sleep shirts for each race, and collected the Shirt tabs which were located on each runner’s bibs. Once we collected the tabs, we each placed them in a clear plastic tub, which the head of staff would use to count if they needed to know how many shirts were distributed. We each took on equal responsibilities for the shirt distribution tasks, and when we were not busy; we conversed and got to know one another a little better. Pizza and burgers were provided for lunch, along with some water or soda to drink. Starbucks was available for everyone to drink freely, and cupcakes were being donated for two dollars towards charity. One of the supporters was a ballet company touring for the holidays, so they chose to put on a free short performance for the visitors at the Freedom Marathon Exposition, while giving the children a free lesson on how to properly stretch the muscles in their body. I thought it was great way to market the business and to get local patrons interested and eager to see more. I found it interesting to see that all ages were running or walking the marathons and it open my eyes up to how many people are actively involved in the community. Everyone was really humble and patient while waiting to receive their shirts which allowed the…

Throughout the essay How to Mark a Book the author, Mortimer J. Adler, brings up the idea and topic of what makes a book worthy of being ‘marked up’ and what he considers to be a light read. He uses examples such as Paradise Lost and Gone with the Wind; The latter being deemed not as worthy. The reason being because it simply does not make you think quite as hard as say, something such as the Bible would. It does not require as much thought and conversation with the author. With that being said, what determines if a book is light? If an easy read of fiction could simply fall into this category, perhaps a book such as The Giver would not require as much thought in comparison to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, therefore not worthy of being marked up. The purpose of this essay will be to determine whether or not…

A regular topic/problem is low scores on patient surveys regarding courtesy and respect. It was during one of our monthly director meetings that what I felt was the most effective communication events occurred. The speaker was not the Hospital President, or the Chief Financial Officer, but the woman who was in charge of the hospital volunteers and our small gift shop. She had no fancy power point presentation, no handouts with spreadsheets or diagrams. She spoke of the lack of kindness she was observing between each other as we entered the building each morning. Our faces as we rode up the elevator, our facial expressions as we passed our own co-workers in the hallways. She asked a simple question, if we could not show courtesy to the people we worked with, how our patients would feel this from us. She showed the small clip entitled “You can’t send a duck to eagle school” and while it played passed out little rubber ducks to each of us. We went away from the meeting that day with a renewed spirit. Rubber ducks grace…

In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…

Tuesday, December the eighth, I had my first experience volunteering. As an active member of Webster County High School’s Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) club, I decided that I would leave archery practice a few minutes early and head towards the Providence Food Bank. Every second Tuesday of each month, HOSA meets at the food bank at five-thirty to help prepare senior citizen boxes and assist people in shopping at the food bank. Intrigued by the opportunity to gain a few bonus points and support the club that I am passionate about, I figured why not give it a…

Through my service-learning experience, I was challenged professionally while growing as a future healthcare provider. My volunteer involvement was successfully completed at Mercy Hospital, which lies on the shores of Biscayne Bay. This charming facility has been serving the healthcare needs of South Florida for nearly 60 years. As its mission statement indicates: “In witness of Jesus’ healing mission, Mercy Hospital strives to improve the well-being of those served through a healthcare delivery system designed to promote wellness and cure illness – this institution strives to deliver a qualified service with a thoughtful concern for the whole person. My affiliation to this hospital started back in August 2015. I have reached an aggregate of 350 hours, receiving outstanding marks from my supervisors and becoming the recipient of the 2016 President’s Volunteer Service Award. Particularly, for this English Composition class, I completed 10 hours in the Emergency Department and 10 hours in the Nutrition Counseling Department. During my service to the ER, I worked as a volunteer directly with patients, shadowed nurses, doctors, and clinicians. In addition, my experience with the Nutrition Counseling Department was even more fascinating considering that I was able to see with my own eyes the importance of nutrition. The…
