Not understanding her background or the situation going on at home, I bluntly asked, “Elizabeth, why do you look like a bum?” That was my last encounter with her as she began bursting out in tears and ran out of the room. My words killed, literally and figuratively. My sixth grade mind slowly felt guilty about hurting my friend’s feelings, however I never got the chance to apologize. My Mom was friends with Elizabeth’s mom and one day she sat me down to explain what makes a person unique. She stated, “The story is not written thru appearance, it is spoken from the heart.” Instead of trying to look at the pictures open the book and read the words.
