statement it says that if Teddy doesn't grab him by the tail or put him in a cage Rikki-tikki should run in and out of the house all day.
That's when Rikki heard a strange noise. Once he got outside he noticed that someone had made a beautiful nest. Darzee and his wife made this nest but they were very miserable due to an encounter with their dead bird eggs. Darzee mentioned that Nag had eaten them when they fell out of the nest. Rikki was curious about who Nag was and why he would want to eat the bird eggs. Rikki-tikki-tavi finally found out who Nag was and knew that Nag was doing wrong. He knew that Nag would either try to kill him or his family. Nag was afraid of Rikki because he knew that Mongooses are more powerful and Rikki would try to get
rid of him. That's when Nag distracted Rikki just long enough to get his attention off of Nag’s wife so that Nagaina, Nag’s wife, could strike. But, she missed. Rikki knew what the real war was and who he would be facing. Rikki had to protect his family because one night Nag was going to hide out in the bathroom waiting for the big man to take his bath so that he could strike. The snakes knew that if the bungalow was empty, Rikki would go, and without Rikki, their eggs were safe. In the passage it states, "...At the bottom of his cold heart, he was afraid." Nag was afraid of Rikki because he knew that Rikki is going to get rid of him, and so he did. Rikki heard Nag and Nagaina's conversation and knew exactly what their intentions were, and because of that Rikki had the chance to kill Nag and he took it. The passage states, "Then he was battered to and fro as a rat is shaken by a dog—to and fro on the floor, up and down, and around in great circles, but his eyes were red and he held on as the body cart-whipped over the floor..." Rikki protected his family and was the house mongoose that most mongoose's wanted to be. He knew that Nag wanted to kill the humans because then the mongoose would leave the bungalow. If Rikki left the bungalow the whole garden would be Nag’s, and their eggs could hatch and grow. If Nag got close to Teddy, Rikki would especially attack, but even if the snakes got close to killing or hurting the parents of Teddy Rikki would still attack and kill them. Rikki-tikki-tavi was the house mongoose that protected his family. Nag only wanted room for his eggs but didn't have that room in the garden if the humans and the mongoose were there. Nag decided that if he killed the humans the mongoose would leave because there was nothing to protect, but Rikki got to Nag and Nagaina first.
