There have been many situations in which students have lost interest in learning because of the lack of importance of the material being taught to them. Some students don’t know to how to relate the material they are being taught to the real world, leading them to lose interest and to become less engaged in school. According to the author David Broder, students dropped out of high school due to lack of motivation and care (Source 4). They’d much rather obsess over popularity and drugs, …show more content…
than to study and focus on becoming a successful student. Author Floyd Norris points out that spending a lot money on standardized tests doesn’t equate to high scores (Source 5). This proves that exams do not help students anyway, and if anything, harms them. Schools want students to do well on the exams because they believe it’s a good learning tool, but studies show that exams do the opposite. There needs to be less exams because they are stressful and inaccurate. The exams causes the students to lose hope in learning the material because they feel that the exam are useless and does not define their intellectuality.
It is disappointing to see teachers and administrators concentrating on their presentation rather than their actual teaching.
They want their students to be able to pass country issued exams, but they aren’t concerned about the students’ retainment of the information. Painter Norman Rockwell would agree with this problem; in ‘The Spirit of Education,’ the woman in the background is forcing the spirit upon the child, who looks uncomfortable (Source 6). She is glorifying education, however, the kids are unappreciative of her actions. It is made to look perfect, but in reality, it is very flawed. A solution to this disaster is to focus on taking the time to teach the students life skills that could be used in the future. Students would be able to utilize their knowledge of what they were taught to actually handle unplanned situations. If a child has a career option in mind, then the best way to prepare him or her is to give them real life, hands on experience where they can be prepared to make money and support themselves. Even though teachers want their students to do well in the future and be outstanding, they ultimately only care about passing the
exams.
The school system is flawed in so many ways. Sadly, in some cases, students feel that school is not important to be successful and that teachers only care about their personal evaluation.
