By definition, an allusion is a reference, within a literary work, to another work of fiction, a film, a piece of art or even a real event and it serves as a kind of shorthand, drawing on this outside work to provide greater context or meaning to the situation being written about (Wiehardt). In poetry, allusion is a must device for it standard form. If using allusions is great, smart and economical ways for the author to communicate with the reader with least use of words, it sometime is confusing for the reader. Allusions require the readers to be aware, to be familiar and to know them in order to understand the poems correctly. The poem “Sonnet” of Billy Collins is a perfect example for using this type of device in poetry. Billy Collins used a lot of allusions in this particular work. Therefore, just by reading through it, the poem seems to make no sense and its theme is very difficult to grasp. However, by taking time and carefully studying all the allusions, one can see that the hidden theme behind this poem is simply a clever satirical comment on sonnets.…
The poem reminds me of the time I spent at my aunt’s farm when I was younger. Early mornings checking for eggs in the chicken coop. Remembering the smell of the outdoors intensified by the morning dew. I remember watching my uncle work in the fields of corn while I tended to the animals. Those days on…

Throughout this poem, Patricia Clark finds the challenging things that appear small; she connects them to beautiful imagery, in a sense, giving hope in a situation where there isn't always. My favorite use of imagery is “Beyond the Lamberton Creek, August slow and flat”. Not a ripple or a rill.” It puts this image in your head of a completely still creek; it is beyond the natural, and it ties into the image of a family who are all so similar that their personalities flow together like a still river, but then you add the “black sheep,” and that’s when it begins to ripple. There is sadness shown through her choices in imagery—not negativity, but sadness.…
I feel this poem has impressionistic, decorative, and picturesque imagery. To allow you to visualize what’s going on and experience the emotions being expressed. Symbols were used to help add to the picture. One would be the bird that has a broken wing and moving in circles showed that everyone is capable of getting hurt. Another symbol is the goat’s bones, symbolizing that danger is always present in our lives. Birney used alliteration to flow from one word to another. An example of this would be “seracs that shore”. Similies were used to create an intense picture.”An overhang crooked like a talon” reveal’s the power and threat a mountain gives off. The metaphorical image: “... mountain... were made to see over, / Stairs to the valleys and steps to the sun’s retreats” relates to life. Mountains are the barriers to life in which you must overcome. The stairs resemble the chance to overcome the barrier. The sun setting shows missed opportunity.…
My goal when writing this paper is to get my opinion and perspective on the poem across to my classmates so they know where I stand, but also to remain broad enough in my writing so that my readers can compare their own response to mine. Maybe in doing that, I can help a fellow classmate or two who has a block and is stuck in the middle of the assignment.…
The shift in images from the beginning to the ending of the poem served as a useful example in showing me how to switch the tone of a poem with grace (I was thinking about my condom poem in this instance) and how to structure lines and words in a way that make the reader think. All in all, Brewington hits the nail on the head with this poem by delivering a prepossessing story of life, death, and all the odd portions…
The sentences are not structured in a conventional way, and it is slightly confusing, but also helps to create a melodic rhythm. When read out loud, the poem sounds almost like a lullaby, and even if the reader doesn’t understand the actual meaning, they still experience the atmosphere of strange contentment. The symbolic mention of the seasons and nature also contributes to this hypnotically content mood; the seasons, weather, celestial bodies, etc. are mentioned a few times, somewhat randomly; for example, on line three “spring summer autumn winter”, line eight “sun moon stars rain”, line eleven “autumn winter spring summer”, etc. These random interjections are almost like a chant, and break up the actual plot of the…
The Poem “1943” by Donald, Hall was a very good poem. When I looked at the title I thought the poem was going to be about WWII because the year 1943 was during the time of WWII. When I read the poem it was about a bunch of teenagers who are getting prepared for war and trained on how to act and be tough. This poem talks about how teen boys are getting taught in school and other places on how to be men in the army and go to war. It also talks about how they have to realize that war is bloody in brutal ,so they have to have tough skin if they want to make it into the military.…
From a young age Billy Collins was infatuated with poetry, even studying Romantic era poetry in college. His fascination with poetry began with a poem by Thom Gunn about Elvis Presley. That poem opened his eyes before that all he knew before that was what his school taught him. Disliking the poetry taught at school, but still intrigued by the medium he sought entertainment from the leftover Poetry magazines his father gave him. After graduating college in 1963 he moved to California to pursue a PhD. in English and studied the Romantic era of the nineteenth century it here he began to think about becoming a poet. He tried finding his own style by mixing local artists like Lawrence Ferlinghetti and counterculture poet Richard Brautigan with the…
The poem The Names by William James Collins is about the tragic events of 9/11 and the people that were lost in the catastrophic events of the heartbreaking event. Mr. Collins illustrates the hurtful events and shows a deep understanding and respect for the tragic events that took place on 9/11. Mr. Collins brings in harsh and truthful events that left a lasting impact on me and others who read this meaningful poem.…
Arguably the most popular poet in America, Billy Collins provides readers with two types of poetry that is nothing like typical poetry. One of his unique styles is writing as if the poem could be read like a novel. The other type brings humor and whimsy to his work, yet he hints at a seriousness that lies beneath the surface. Both styles of poetry are easy to read, but take a second look to realize what the Collins is intending the reader to understand. Billy Collins is an exceptionally talented poet whose writing at first can be taken to be a simple comedy but when read more carefully, it can be interpreted as a far more complex script. First readings of the poems I Chop Some Parsley While Listening To Art Blakey's Version Of Three Blind Mice, Victorias Secret, and Shoveling Snow with Buddha might convince the reader that Collins is offering poems that are clever yet easy to read and understand. A quick reading of Collins poems shows a similarity of his witty style, although the subject matter of each is different.First glance readings of these poems might lead readers to the following interpretations. A man wasting his time flipping through the pages of a Victorias Secret magazine. A man shoveling snow from a driveway with Buddha. Lastly, a man daydreaming about the childrens rhyme Three Blind Mice. However, if these poems are read more carefully they reveal a hidden richness in their meanings. In the first reading of the poem Victorias Secret, the narrator is flipping through the pages of a lingerie magazine. He describes the outfits of the eight models in great detail. For example, wearing a deeply scalloped / flame-stitched halter top / with padded push-up styling / and easy side-zip tap pants. Also, the narrator evaluates the mood of each model by the expression on her face. For instance, looks at me over her bare shoulder, / cannot hide the shadow of annoyance in her brow. None of the models in the photographs seem to like narrator looking at…

All roads do not lead to Rome. There are some roads in life that lead to adventure and freedom, and others that will turn us into people who sit idly by and passively accept whatever comes our way. One must choose which path to take not only in life, but also when analyzing poetry. Stephen Dunn uses his ars poetica poem “Poetry” to point out that while the poet should and does exert some amount of influence, the ultimate interpretation of the poem must be left up to the reader.…
I wrote as soon as I heard. Please Billy, don't fret about my past, that is the reason I write to you. I hear of all these stories but I only wish to hear from you. You speak of the birds, Billy, describe their color and size. Tell me how it feels to have them perform a concert just for you. Tell me of the feeling of the wind on your skin. Tell me of the secrets that the wind carries as it brushes along you neck. Tell me of the wonder of the ocean and how its allure compels you to selfishly bring home some of the sand in your shoes in the hope that one day the whole ocean will be in your backyard. Billy, all of the questions which I have neglected to asks these men I simply must ask you. And most importantly, I must ask you about what lies…
