There is no greater support system in the United States than a universities athletic department. With records to be broken, championships to be won and legacies to be created, college athletes are given special priorities. No college athlete is given more special treatment than college football players. They are given special buildings and receive thousands of dollars in scholarships and equipment and are treated as celebrities when they walk around campus. At universities across the country, coaches and athletic directors cover up any athlete’s mistakes that could result in their player’s suspension from the team, just to keep their playoff dreams alive. However, these athletes leave hundreds of victims behind, victims who are afraid to speak…

Higher education has changed their values and standards towards student athletes.Taylor Branch points out that “Big time college sports... selects athletes mainly for their athletics, not academics, interests, and abilities.” This shows that colleges view athletes more as “athletes-students” than “student-athletes” (Eckard 211). This point of view is just one reason why the graduation rate for college athletes is so low. However, universities make athletes’ graduation rates seem more favorable so that they can continue to recruit and get more skilled amateur players to generate millions of dollars for their institutions. Although some may say colleges do an effective job of taking care of, and graduating, their student-athletes, the reality…

I have opinions to both sides of this argument. Yes, performance enhancing drugs make you better. Then there are the athletes who have natural abilities to dominate, who might as well be on these supplements, but in the sports world we call them “freaks,” and not in a bad way. Some would say it is unfair because they weren’t blessed with the same natural abilities. Others would let it be and take it for what it is, use it for fuel to better themselves. The substances named earlier such as “Roids” builds muscle mass, it can help an Olympics power lifter do more weight. Human Growth Hormone help shed fat while building muscle, this can help a football play become bigger but also faster because of the low body fat percentage. Stimulants such as caffeine or nitric oxide help for focus and energy, even aggression; I don’t hold this as something that really makes anyone that much better. Diuretics help expel water in the body; this can help a boxer achieve the right weight for a fight.…

As the use of performance enhancing drugs is becoming more popular among athletes, many of them don 't understand the risks involved in taking these drugs. Many people are looking for a quick way to build muscle, or to get stronger the fastest way possible. Using these performance aids may very well be a quick fix for many athletes, but taking these supplements is unethical and dangerous. Using special drugs to boost an athletes performance is degrading to sports and to the athlete. The human body can produce the same substances naturally, without taking drugs, but people continue to load up on these supplements such as creatine or androstenedione. If the athlete is patient and works hard he can achieve the same strength that he would obtain using supplements. Athletes are trying to cheat using unnatural shortcuts to gain their muscle instead of spending the long hours in the weight room.…
