RETRACTION OF RIZAL

Issues Involved

He was a great philosopher, thinker and a great advocate of the nation’s freedom and independence form the Spanish colonizers. And so the alleged retraction scandal came as a shock to his family, close friends, colleagues, followers and those that believe in him. The intensity of his life and work all thrown away by the retraction controversy damaging his image as a hero and his reputation for being a man true to his words.

The Jesuits claim and Fr. Balaguer

The Jesuits announced after the death of Jose Rizal that he retracted. They claimed that during his stay at the death cell awaiting his sentence to be carried upon he wrote and signed a retraction document stating his regret and his acceptance of the Catholic faith, then his marriage to his Irish mistress, Josephine Bracken on the morning of his execution. Their claims they said were supported by the alleged retraction document and by Fr. Balaguer's memorandum-record or the so-called "Obra". This retraction document presented was claimed to be written and signed by Jose P. Rizal:

I declare myself a Catholic and in this religion in

I retract with all my heart whatever in my words,

writings, publications and conduct has been contrary

to my quality as a son of the Catholic Church.

I believe and profess whatever she teaches and I

submit myself to whatever she commands.

I abominate Masonry, as the enemy that it is of the

Church, and as a Society prohibited by the Church.

The Diocesan Prelate can, as the Superior Ecclesiastical

authority, make public this spontaneous manifestation

of mine in order to repair the scandals the my acts have

caused and so that God and the people

may pardon me.

Fr. Balaguer in his version of the story on 29-30 December claims of being the officiating priest who as he put it was the instrument of God in winning back the faith of Doñ Jose Rizal in the Iglesias Catholica Romana and who married

Our praise and treatment of these types of heroes is in its own way a form of acceptance and justification of the cruel deeds carried out by these men in the name of progress. He feels that history is told through the point of view of governments and leaders to conceal the truth of the people who had to pay an unjust price for the sake of others they probably did not know. He gives many examples within his book that shows how certain facts are covered up or briefly brought up and dismissed. When studying or just sharing history it is important to have a full understanding of all points of views. When told from just one point of view people may not be as they seem or are portrayed.…

As said above the reactivity of metals when moving across the periodic table the reactivity decreases and when moving down a group the reactivity increases. This is caused by relationship between the core charge and valence electrons. When moving across a period each element will have the same number of shells, but each of their core charges are going to be different. The core charges become higher the farther across the period you move. An increase of core charge, means a decrease in shells making it harder to pull electrons away because they are closer to the nucleus, which causes for there to be a great attraction between the nucleus and electrons.…

In his speech he seems less interested in refuting the charges, which he easily shows to be made up and inconsistent, than in explaining the hatred towards him and defending his "philosopher's mission of searching into myself and the people." He has been an annoying person to the state, urging its citizens to self-improvement, and in his search for wisdom he exposed their ignorance. In fact he asked the politicians, the poets, and the craftsmen and found that he had an advantage over them, because he had no pride of knowledge. I found this very true. His true enemies, he realizes, are not his prosecutors but all those who oppose the life of reason and virtue, who disappear before his conviction that "the unexamined life is not worth living". I agree with this phrase because I think that I have to question and reason things out to understand. I believe that cross-examination makes you feel worth living. A relaxed and not questioned life is not life. So this helped my attitude towards life.…

He became “innocent” again: his past made him accept progressivism. He came comprehend the existence of corruption at the national echelon. Out of these experiences emerged his social philosophy learnt from “life as it is lived” (Autobiography 231). It took him years to understand that history is not what is taught in books but as the strong men behind the scene shape it. It took him sometime to understand the underlying system of corruption but having understood the techniques of corruption he concluded that the blame of corruption should go to people and not the bosses in power. Revolution, two decades of it – Mexican and Bolshevik, the Mc-Nammara Case, World War I, and the advent of Fascism took him through the last excursion of education. His autobiographical persona made it essential for him to remember most of what the schools had taught him were lies to be unlearned. “Veneration with Understanding” by Armand J. Malay is an eye opener. It revealed me the truth about revering Jose Rizal. It also helped me realize the faux information on Prof. Constantino’s “Veneration without Understanding”. It almost duped me. I was about to believe on what he had written on his thesis. After I read his work, I started to question Rizal’s title as the national hero. The argument that Prof. Constantino had presented was quite convincing and so I agreed with him. But later on I realized that Rizal really deserves to be venerated since he had done great things which are very crucial in the Philippine history. Jose Rizal’s achievements and noble qualities are the reason why people admire him and consider him as a model. I venerate Rizal not because he is the said national hero but because he is an undisputable national hero. Rizal’s precious works on literacy and Rizal himself are still alive in most hearts of the Filipino people until today. He showed the genuine heroism. He is incomparable to any other Filipino heroes and that makes him on top.…
