The speech “Claiming and Education was written by Adrienne Rich in 1997. This speech was presented at Douglass College. In the speech Rich addresses how society views young women for sexist and woman duty such as begin nice, cooking and cleaning. However, rich wants young women to see that it is so much more than just being what society wants us to be. That young woman should be able to achieve their highest level of education in life. Rich wants the first-semester woman to look at their educated and claim it as their rightful owe. Rich makes different statements on how society may want us to view things. On the other hand, rich also makes statements on how young woman should have a responsibility to say what is they
want such as their education. Rich does not want young women to feel as though they cannot proclaim their education because they are a female. A young woman should not have to let people think for them or use their body to get what their need. Rich wants a young woman to know that they are as equal to a man as men are to a woman. Rich tries to get these first-semester women ready to face whatever challenges that they may be faced with this semester. Rich wants young woman to know that it can be sexist to achieve that higher education but, to not let that get in the way of taking that highest level in getting that career. To set yourself up for better things and fight for your rights.
