Rhetorical Situation
Author
Steven Ashley wrote this article, Steven Ashley is a researcher at the Mechanical Engineering Department at Santa Clara University. He is also an associate editor at Santa Clara University. The author trying to tell the audience about the mechatronics and building his believability with his personal facts and other published research sources by citing facts and statistics. Also, he outlines the uses and examples of mechatronics in our daily life. Steven Ashley continuous by discussing some of the reasons that why we need mechatronics in our daily life.
Context
This article “Getting a hole on mechatronics” is first published at the Mechanical Engineering Magazine feature article in the year of May 2007.
Audience
Audiences of this article include students who are in the mechanical engineering major, the professional engineer in mechanical field, professional researcher in the mechatronics field, mechatronics designer and those who want to learn more about the mechatronics designs.
Analysis of Strategies
Exemplification
Exemplification is giving some example. An exemplification analysis usually begins with the main point of view, opinion and then gives some people facts and examples to explain that point of views or opinions. Steven Ashley uses the method-exemplification as strategies to tell the audience his idea. In this article, Steven Ashley uses the computer hard disk from Seagate Technology as his example of how mechatronic design because it exhibits quick response, precision and robustness. What is more, he use another example (the sensor in the washer) for his exemplification strategies “following mechatronic principal, general electric’s profile super 32… a sensor base feedback control that maintains correct water temperature no matter the load size.” to let the audience know many thing in our daily life are all done by computer control, which can make it much more easier for people. In this article, it is not hard to see that Steven Ashley uses many exemplification strategies to explain his main idea to the audience and building his believability by using this writing method.
Cause and Effect
Cause and effect method is that author start with an object and than show some reasons to the audiences.
A simple cause and effect strategy method is to discusses the chain of events related to object or a person, and than showing what are the causes and what are the results. In this article, Steven Ashley widely uses this method to throughout and develops his point of views in the article. For instance, he mentions that: “by the 2000s, communication technology was added to the mechatronics, yielding products that could be connected in large networks...This development made function such as the remote operation of robotic manipulator arms possible.” In addition, he uses another example in cause and effect analysis method to tell the audience why mechatronics should be wields use in our daily life. He said that: “the early robotic arms, then unable to coordinate their movement and without sensory feedback…with the advances mechatronics sensor system…that made robots more flexible and thus more useful was then brought to bear on the design of new generations of high performance, adaptable machinery of all kinds.” From the examples above, we can clearly see that Steven Ashley use cause and effect analysis method to show audiences a chain of connected events to the each of the logical result of the one …show more content…
before.
Analysis of Appeals
Logos
Logos mean the logical appeal, logos is the use of strategies of logic to persuade your audience. In other word, logos mean something that is logical and it is reasonable. For example, by writing his paper, Steven Ashley uses strong appeals to logos, with many facts and logical ideas. He points out facts about the mechatronics use in daily life and the outgiving of the mechatronics: “ we now have viable technology for computer control of mechanical systems at all levels… that alone male it different from anything you could do 25 years ago.” This fact support the idea that mechatronics is widely use in our daily and improve the people life in a more comfortable way in the past 25 years.
Conclusion
In this article, Steven Ashley first sets the arena by telling the audience what is a mechatronics and then he outlines the uses and examples of mechatronics in our daily life.
Steven Ashley continuous by discussing some of the reasons that why we need mechatronics in our daily life by using different appeals and strategies. What is more, throughout he piece, Ashley uses many strong sources that intensify his credibility call to ethos, as well as build her point of views. Those sources include, “ The basic idea is to apply new controls to extract new levels of performance from a mechanical device,” “Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and ASME,” and the journal which is published by the University of California Berkeley. By citing these sources supports Ashley’s credibility by showing that he has done her research and has shown audiences facts and trues. In his research paper, he also uses his personal examples from his career teaching and study, in which can show that he has a first hand personal experiences base on this topic. In my opinion, he can improve by adding more comparison strategy for the reason that to show how subjects are alike and
different.
