Rhetorical Analysis
As of today only 5 states in the USA have legalized doctor assisted suicide for those individuals that are dying of a terminal illness. The states that have legalized assisted suicide are Vermont, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and California, all have laws in effect to protect both the doctor and the individual. In the photograph I see a couple standing next to each other while the blonde women holds a handkerchief and a picture of a girl, while standing in an office or hallway with others standing in the background dressed in business attire and a larger room beyond those standing. The women?s face appears to have a few emotions, happiness, sadness and relief. The photograph employs Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in an attempt to convince the audience that assisted suicide is the correct thing to do, since in doing so you alleviate terminally ill patients from their pain and suffering for the rest of their life. The couple in the picture that is presented have a seemingly one-sided mindset (pro-assisted suicide). This helps and hinders the claim because it reveals to the viewer the proposition, but also makes him or her either agree or disagree, in a way removing the possibility of a compromise or convincing the opposing side. In a visual point of view, the author uses a picture of a couple who seem to be happy and at the same time the women appears sad while holding a picture of a girl and a handkerchief. This could help the viewer focus their attention and directly relate to the argument if they too have encountered a similar
