In the early spring of 1986, The Challenger was scheduled to launch in the morning from the Kennedy Space Center. The Challenger had seven passengers. One of these passengers was a Christa McAuliffe, a social studies teacher from New Hampshire. She was the first ordinary citizen to be going to space. The social studies teacher had won the opportunity through NASA’s Teachers in space program. The spacecraft was in the air only seventy-three seconds before it exploded and broke apart into the ocean. Everyone was in shock. All the passengers were killed tragically. This put a horrible mark on NASA’s reputation. Some even wanted to close the exploration to space. American was in mourning and everyone felt the blow of the tragedy. However, President Ronald Reagan saw it fit to continue space exploration. He gave an argument and a tribute to America and the families of the lost passengers. His tribute swayed American to see the silver lining in the tragedy and understand why we must continue the journey to explore space.…
On August 8, 2013, a field of rice, called “Golden Rice”, was completely devastated by a group of angry Filipino protestors. However, this was no ordinary rice. It was genetically modified rice that was designed to alleviate some major problems in the world. One farmer passionately said, “we do not want our people, especially our children, to be used in these experiments.” However, there were several people outraged by this act of vandalism. One of those people, Amy Harmon, decided to bury the notion that Golden Rice is detrimental to human health. She attempted this difficult task in her article, “Golden Rice: Lifesaver?” I will be analyzing how she conveys her message to the readers of the article in this rhetorical analysis essay. I argue…
The author, Nicholas D. Kristof, begins his essay by describing Phnom Penh, a place where many families are forced to live in poverty because of the lack of jobs. The problem Kristof identifies is the labor standards that are set from President Obama and the Democrats who try to eliminate the use of sweatshops. Furthermore, the labor standards are set by people who have never witnessed the daily struggles a person faces living in Phnom Penh.…
Sometimes a stern warning is just what you need in order to push you to take a step back and evaluate your next move, especially when it could be a life changing one. In “Alumnus Welcomes New UC Berkeley Students with Stern Warning,” Shouak Bagchi, an alumnus of UC Berkeley, addresses the Berkeley freshmen class of 2017 with appraisal and advice for the future. Bagchi writes to the new students about what attending one of the most prestigious public universities entails. This article is rhetorically persuasive due to the fact that Bagchi is an alumnus of UC Berkeley. He references topics that the students can relate to and he mentions many of the successful alumni of the university.…
Throughout the tragic novel Into the Wild, author Jon Krakauer provides an in depth analysis of the life and lonely death of Christopher McCandless. McCandless was a young man straight out of college, looking to find himself while hitchhiking alone in the bush of Alaska. Unfortunately for Chris his well anticipated venture turned fatal after a hundred some days alone in the wilderness. Jon Krakauer uses rhetorical methods for the duration of the book, which allows him to speak of Chris’s life with a sense of certainty. The reader thus trusts Krakauer’s narrative and somewhat understands why a man like Chris could head into unknown territory without a second thought. The author shows his qualification for writing about Chris by making comparisons with his own life and interviewing those close to Chris…
It has been twenty-eight years since the music group Niggaz Wit Attitudes, abbreviated as N.W.A, released their “Straight Outta Compton” music video in 1988. Twenty-eight years after the song’s release, racism and police brutality are still very much at the heart of Hip-Hop and black culture in contemporary America. During the music video, members of N.W.A portray images of the violent setting of Compton, California, a city that has been synonymous with poverty, drugs, rap music, sex, and gang violence for years. “Straight Outta Compton,” written in its crude and coarse manner, draws on the struggle of growing up in such a community, where the majority of youth end up being either a victim or perpetrator of gang violence by the time they reach adulthood.…

Residing as a foreigner in China for two years, Hessler was able to observe the Chinese way of life and their selflessness, which contradicted his view of the American lifestyle. The Chinese were generous; they cared for the sick and elderly; they had close relationships with their family and friends. Americans were selfish; they abandoned the elderly at retirement homes; they lived distant social lives. Similarly, Morris Berman, a social and cultural historian and critic, believes that Americans live a life devoted to consumerism. Interviewed by David Masciotra of The Atlantic, Berman discusses his view that American culture is superficial and obsessed with social status based on wealth and possessions. While Hessler also identifies China’s generous and caring way of life, both men realized America’s cultural weaknesses of monetary obsession and selfish…

In South Central, Los Angeles, there is a food epidemic taking place among the population. For miles and miles, the only easily attainable food source is fast food; causing the overconsumption of un-nutritious, greasy, and fattening food. This is the problem brought to the public’s attention by speaker Ron Finley in his Ted Talks speech, “A Guerilla Gardener in South Central L.A.” Finley explains how everywhere he looks in his native South Central, all he sees are fast food chains and Dialysis clinics opened due to the lack of nutritious food. Finley views the lack of a healthy food source as a serious problem, and brings up his point; there are miles of vacant lots throughout Los Angeles, all of which could be used for the cultivation of healthy fruits and vegetables to better the urban community’s diet and health.…
Well-known Sci-fi writer, Ray Bradbury, in his novel, Fahrenheit 451, illustrates that relationships reflect who individuals are and who they want to be. Bradbury’s purpose is to promote the idea that a person should have the courage to listen to their own beliefs and thoughts of happiness rather than to blend in with society. He adopts a disoriented and poetic tone in order to appeal to similar feelings and experiences on a non-realistic scale in his young adult readers.…
February 7, 1997, Chinese New Year: My relatives and I gather in my grandmother’s three-room Mott Street apartment around the round kitchen table, half –hidden under boxes of don tot, cha siu bao and othere Chinese delicacies from the local dim sum parlor. My Uncle Alex rapidly mutters something to me in Chinese, but all I can do is stare at him quizzically and scratch my head. “ Still can’t speak Chinese?” he teases me, now in English. “ How old are you? 13? And you still can’t talk to your grandmother, can’t even buy a fish in Chinatown. What are you waiting for?”…
An article in Crossing Cultures, a publication of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, recalled how a major international blunder was successfully avoided when Mncy Regan revised an earlier decision to bring along her White House china on a state visit to the People's Republic of China in 1984. The Chinese were offended by the implication that China, of all countries, might be deficient in these regard. On the same trip, President Reagan himself fell afoul of the local culture when he offended a shopkeeper by asking him to "keep the change" after paying for a small souvenir, an insulation a country where tips are reserved for lowly servants.…
Second, the gesture when eating is different from China to America. People in America will think that it is rude to make the sound made from chewing. But In China, if you are eating with a loud sound, it will not be criticized, at the same time, the host will think that you must love the food, and which will satisfied the host. In America, when having a party, it is liberal to leave before others leave, but in China, people should not leave before all the people have already finished their meal. Because leaving the table early might be considered you do not respect other people.…
The first impression is when I traveled from airport to the university, the drivers on the road may stop and wait to let the pedestrian or other drivers to pass the streets, which may not happen in China. This kindness help to foster a good driving habit, which contribute to a safe and organized traffic. Most people are consciously abided by public order. At the train station or subway station, bus station, bank, post office, people will wait for the service in line. Beside the ATM machine, people will consciously and are using the machine to keep a reasonable distance, which show respects to other people. On escalators, people may stand on the right to make sure people who may in harry to use the left side. You may hear people say “please” or “thank you” many times a day, even when you get off the bus, people may say thank you to the bus driver. People do not do this in China, but here I came to get used to this good manner to show respect to people’s service for you. In the Chinese banquet, the guest will leave quickly after the last dish is finished. In British culture, after meal people stay to have a social conversation is regarded as polite behavior. Party therefore…
