One thing I loved about the book is the characters. Everybody has an identity that they will have to live by to cover their real one. Every half-blood has ADHD and is dyslexic because they need for fighting skill and understanding The Greek language. For example, like Chiron,he's supposed to be Mr.Bummer, a Latin teacher in a motorized wheelchair, but his real identity is a centaur, half man, and half horse. Another thing that I like was the …show more content…
author’s writing style. Rick Riordan is really good at describing the setting, actions and character’s feeling. For instance, when Percy was fighting against his algebra teacher who turned into a monster.
“Then the weirdest thing happened. Her eyes begin to grow like barbecue coals. Her fingers stretched, turning into talons. Her jacket melted into large, leather wings. She wasn’t a human. She was a shriveled hag with bat wings and claws and a mouth full of yellow fangs, and she was about to slice me into ribbons
Then things got even stranger.”
The characters and how Rick Riordan tells book makes it’s an enjoyable and interesting book.
After reading the book, The Lightning Thief, the one theme that stands out is about identity.Your identity is what you discover and think about yourself and so as other people too.
In the story, Percy starts out to be a troubled kid to humans but actually, acts that way because he’s half-blood. For example, Percy has dyslexia because it's mine is hardwired to ancient Greek instead of English, and his ADHD so he can be impulsive during a battle to stay alive and his senses too. This confirms his mental illnesses were to keep him alive as a half-blood. As the story progresses, Percy is welcomed into Camp Half-Blood knowing who he really is now,but found out what other people think of him.For instance when Chiron tells Percy about the big feud with his dad and Zeus about the missing lightning bolt that was taken from Zeus on page
135.
“And it’s missing”
“Stolen,” Chiron said.
“By who?”
“By whom,”Chiron corrected.Once a teacher, always a teacher.”By you”. My mouth fell open.
“At least”- Chiron held up a hand-” that’s what Zeus thinks”. This validates that people will judge or blame you based on who you are. Lastly, Percy comes back from his quest, completed, and is looked as a hero to the campers and feels like he had done something. For example, when Percy is given an award for completing his quest and feels cared about and happy.
“I'm not sure I've ever felt as happy or sad as I did that moment. I finally found a family, people who cared about me and thought I done something right. And in the morning most of them will be leaving for the year.” This shows your identity can change for something that is good. Identity is who you are and how people will look at you.
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is an engaging book to read. The book takes you through Percy’s crazy quest to get the lightning bolt back to Zeus.Young readers should read the lightning thief because of the ancient Greek that is talked about. For example, Percy runs into a waterbed store in realizing the salesman is another monster.
“Your real name’s not Crusty, is it ?” I asked.
“Legally it’s Procrustes” he admitted.
“The Stretcher,” I said. I remember the story: the giant who’d try to kill Theseus with excess hospitality on his way to Athens.”
Another, reason readers should read this book of its modern twist. For instance, when Percy and his friends end up at a casino for teenagers.
“The whole lobby was a giant game room. And I'm not talking about cheesy old Pac-Man games or slot machines. There was an indoor waterslide snaking around the glass elevator, which went straight up at least forty floors. There was a climbing wall on the side of one building and an indoor bungee jumping bridge. There was a virtual reality suits with working laser guns and hundreds of video games, each one the size of a widescreen TV. Basically, you name it, this place had it.There were a few other kids playing but not that many. No waiting for any of the games. There were waitresses and snack bars all around serving every kind of food you can imagine.”
Also, there a lot of humor which makes it a funny book too. For example, when Percy was getting chased by the Minotaur and realized that the Minotaur only had underwear on.
“He wore no clothes except underwear- I mean bright white Fruit of the Looms- which would’ve to look funny, except that the top half of his body was so scary.
I highly recommend this book to ten through thirteen-year-olds to read.
