with his power and was often known as the god that had ferocious outbursts, but he was also a leader. Poseidon is mostly known in modern culture as his Roman name, Neptune, who even has a Planet named after him, the eighth planet to be specific. Poseidon is still relevant in our modern day society and has influenced much in current times.
First and foremost, This god was a god substantial factor of Greek mythology.“Poseidon was the
son of titans Cronus and Rhea, he and his siblings were swallowed because of his fear that they would one day overrule him”(GVRL). One child didn’t get swallowed, Zeus, and when he grew up he gave his father a potion that made him throw up his siblings. In addition, This act leads Poseidon to join with his brother in the battle against their father and the tridents, furthermore they came out victorious. As a result of this, Poseidon and his brothers, Hades and Zeus, decided to divide the universe (Encyclopedia Mythica) . Zeus the sky, Hades the underworld and Poseidon got the sea, but not only did they get a portion of the universe, but these gods were given gifts out of gratitude by the Cyclops whom they liberated for the battle against Cronus. Poseidon received the Triton, a three-pronged spear that held most of his power. As stated in (GVRL), "Poseidon was often portrayed riding in a chariot pulled by horses or hippocampus in ancient art." and a back part of a fish. There is a myth where it is said that Poseidon disguise himself as a horse to seduce his sister Demeter and they had a son Aryan which was the first horse. In fact, Poseidon's strong connection to horses, would influence many Greeks to drown horses in his honor and they also have a horse race called the Isthmus of Corinth.
Poseidon is still significant today in many ways.
First of all, Poseidon played a key part in the
2005 novel The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan, which follows the adventure of a demigod named Percy Jackson. In the book he is described as Percy’s father and he is portrayed as a god whose moods can range from serene and placid to outraged.
To conclude, Poseidon is still read and referred in society for the reason that he has had
a massive impact in our present-day world.
