Poseidon's Role In Greek Mythology
Poseidon was mainly the god of the sea. He was also the god of horses,and earthquakes. He was the son of titans Cronos and Rhea. His brothers are Zues,and Hades. His sisters are Hera,Hestia,and Demeter. Poseidon was the god of not only the sea but also other bodies of water. Poseidon was the father of of many savage and beastly creatures such as the hunter Orion who was a giant and a huge cyclops called Polyphemus. Poseidon and a Gorgon Medusa(Gorgons were three monsters in Greek Mythology) gave birth to a winged horse named Pegasus. Poseidon fought a giant named Polybotes. He defeated Polybotes by throwing a fragment of a cliff which became an islet named Nisyros. After the gods defeated the giants,Poseidon,Zues,and Hades got different parts …show more content…
Poseidon’s weapon of choice was a trident made by the cyclops. Poseidon hated a hero named Odysseus. In the Odyssey written by Homer Poseidon gets angry at Odysseus because he hurt Poseidon’s son the cyclops Polyphemus. Poseidon tries hard to make Odysseus fail but eventually Odysseus reaches Ithaca and saves his wife Penelope from a lot of suitors. A suitor is a man who pursues a relationship with a specific woman. Poseidon married Amphitrite the goddess of the sea. There are two myths on how Poseidon was born. One is that his father Cronos swallowed Poseidon and his brothers and sisters. Zues rescued them. Another is that his mother Rhea saved him from getting swallowed from his father by giving him to a flock of lambs and Rhea tricked Cronos that she gave birth to a colt and Cronos ate the colt instead. Poseidon was raised by Telkhines which were sea demons. Rhea trusted them in raising Poseidon. Poseidon was a the god of an important resource which is water. He played a major role in Greek Mythology. He was one of the main three gods with Zues and Hades. Some people say that the main three gods are the oldest but this is not true the oldest god is Aphrodite the goddess of love is. She was born when the Ouranos the primal god of the sky died.
