During the creation of the city of Athens, Poseidon and Athene compete in order to become the patron god for the city by giving the people a gift using their divine powers. Poseidon strikes the ground with his trident to create a well of spring water while Athene creates an olive tree that produces good food and oil. Athene wins, and Poseidon, out of angered and jealousy, floods the land and city (March 229-300). In Iliad, Poseidon describes how he was temporarily stripped of his powers by Zeus as punishment and forced to work for King Laomedon of Troy.
