First, Rigoberta Menchu is a good example of global leader because she took action by helping indigenous people. Also, Menchu was always making sure that “she act, personally or collaboratively, in creative and ethical ways to contribute to improvement, and assess impact of actions taken”. Next, she gave to the Natives rights where they could have a better life without oppression. En un principio, Rigoberta era sólo una mujer guatemalteca ordinaria. In the beginning, Rigoberta was just an ordinary guatemalan woman. Her perspective on the world changed when her family was brutally murdered. Her mother was raped, her head was shaved and beaten, her feet had no soles, and her fingernails and toenails were ripped out, then burned alive. Her brother was found the same way, and her father was burned for occupying the Guatemalan embassy in an attempt to bring the injustice being brought upon the indigenous people. She is quoted to have said that those battles, both the external, physical one and the emotional, mental one “fueled her decision to fight.”…

Rigoberta Menchú was born on January 9, 1959 to a poor Indian peasant family and raised in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture. In her early years she helped with the family farm work, either in the northern highlands where her family lived, or on the Pacific coast, where both adults and children went to pick coffee on the big plantations. Rigoberta Menchú soon became involved in social reform activities through the Catholic Church, and became prominent in the women's rights movement when still only a teenager. Such reform work aroused considerable opposition in influential circles, especially after a guerilla organization established itself in the area. The Menchú family was accused of taking part in guerrilla activities and Rigoberta's father, Vicente, was imprisoned and tortured for allegedly having participated in the execution of a local plantation owner. After his release, he joined the recently founded Committee of the Peasant Union (CUC). In 1983, she told her life story to Elisabeth Burgos Debray. The book is called, I, Rigoberta Menchú, it is an interesting document which…

A dictionary definition of a leader is a guiding hand in a movement or group. My definition of a leader is someone who stands out amongst the rest and steps up to the task and helps the “followers” advance and strive to become a leader as well. The only way a leader can be effective is by leading by example. A prime example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She was shot in the face for trying to go to school. If she hadn’t gone to school she wouldn’t have been shot, but she also wouldn’t have a Nobel Peace prize. She is now using her story to speak for access to education for everyone. A leader is someone who leads by example and uses their skills to help others succeed.…

At the beginning of the book, Burgous provides an elaborate and concise timeline throughout the chapters to help readers comprehend who Rigoberta was and where she came from. Through each chapter, she provides brief information , but also made sure that the information did not overshadow the purpose of the message or theme she wanted to come out of the book. Rigoberta is an indigenous Indian who is fighting against all odds for equal rights for her people. I liked that Burgous insinuated how united these villages were and how each played a significant role in eachother's lives. In addition, Burgous does a good job of capturing the important events in Rigoberta’s life. Evidently, they come from poor living conditions that is mentioned throughout…

A leader: a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. This is the textbook definition of a leader although, is this the only way to define a leader? Can a leader be someone who, despite all odds against them, can come out on top, and inspire others to do to them same? Can a leader be someone who's life is filled with physical, as well as emotional pain, but see’s nothing but the best in everything she sees? Can a leader be someone who questions the status quo, and spits in the face of the social norm? Before researching this individual, I might have answer no to these questions. Although, through learning about the amazing and devastating journey Frida Kahlo faced through her life, I am forced to think otherwise.…
