Even during World War II, Rin Tin Tin III, who is rumored to be Rin Tin Tin’s grandson, but is most likely only a distant relative, helped popularize the use of military dogs. Rin Tin Tin IV, along with several unrelated dogs, was featured in a television series, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin in the lat 1950s. Appollo was a search and rescue dog that served with the K-9 unit of the New York City Police Department. Appollo, a fearless German Shepherd, was born in 1992. He graduated from the New York City Police Department Canine Special Operations Division, which was one of the first units in the United States to teach and deploy SAR (search-and-rescue) dogs. Appollo was one of New York’s best police dogs, and contributed to the arrest of multiple individuals. He was a member of the first NYPD canine team to train in Urban Search and Rescue settings. On September 11, 2001, Appollo and his handler, Peter Davis, were called to assist in the rescue effort at the collapsed World Trade Center. The pair arrived at the less than twenty minutes after the collapse of the South Tower, making Appollo the first Search and Rescue dog to arrive. Among the chaos, Appollo quickly went to work looking for and assisting injured victims. At one point, Appollo was almost killed by falling steel and fire, but was saved because he had recently jumped into a pool of water.
