In 1823, English soccer player, William Ebb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it, inspiring the students of Princeton to become involved in a sport they called “ball town”. The first football game was played on November 6th of 1869 in Brunswick, New Jersey between the Rutgers and Princeton. The game was observed by one-hundred spectators and the players wore no helmets or uniforms. The players kept score by giving a team one point each time the goal line was crossed. The Rutgers won the game with a final score of 6 to 4. Walter Camp, the father of American football, later evolved the rules of the game as a coach and athletic director…

Although the NFL's income was very good the large crowds that packed the college stadiums was a financial equalizer for the game and most division one programs were consistently selling out huge stadiums which could hold over 100,000 screaming fans. But statistics for the years before 1937 are hard to come by because the NCAA didn't start keeping official stats until 1937. Most teams played 8 or 9 game seasons before World War II, compared to the 11 to 12 games seasons they play today. The players played both offense and defense in the 1940's and 1950's unlike today when teams have players that just play special…

Green Bay joined the league in 1921 and in 1922 the APFA changed its name to the National Football League (NFL) on June 24. In 1922 after a couple of years of ups and downs the Green Bay Football Corporation was formed by town business men headed by A.B. Turnbull, the general manager of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The team had good financial backing and was getting good players from college and just unknowns off the street and in 1929 they won the first of many championships. In 1935 a lanky wide receiver came on the scene and over the next 10 years helped Green Bay win three championships but the team was still very financially strapped and after 31 years with the organization Curly Lambeau resigned and became the head coach of the Chicago Cardinals. Football over the Years Everything changes over time, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, and others you can’t really tell it has changed at all but in football you can easily tell the changes it has been through over the years. When American football was born it was an all-white sport played with hardly no equipment for protection except for a leather helmet to protect your head, the game was played on hard dirt and as you can expect, injuries were constant and some deaths even occurred from the brutal hits and the missing component of protection equipment.…
