game was still being completed in the United States many decades ago. Pro football
officially began when the National Football League was founded on August 20, 1920, in
Canton, Ohio by seven men, Jim Thorpe being the most well known of the seven. For a
couple decades, the NFL was the only professional football league but then in July of
1959 another league came to be. This new league became known as the American
Football League. But the NFL took this new league as a threat to its business. Therefore,
these two leagues were in a competition for success in pro football. This affair became
known as the NFL and AFL war, they asked questions like “What
can we do to attract
more fans to our league”. In order to accomplish this, the two leagues would try to
attract the best players out of college hoping they would bring success to their league
and teams. The better the player, the more fans would come to watch that player is how
But the league’s couldn’t force a player to choose them, the player would choose in the
end. The National Football League was older and more popular than the American
Football League. But fans and players saw the newer league as an opportunity, the start
of something new, something bold.
After seven years of competing against each other the NFL saw an
opportunity to eliminate the competition. The NFL proposed that the two
leagues merge together as one larger league. On June 8th, 1966 the
league's confirmed that the merge will take place. But only by the 1970
season did the two league’s integrate their regular season schedules. This
event is very important in the history of professional football. This
new league would be the beginning of something great. There was
no more competition for business in professional football. There was only one
dominant league and it became known as the NFL.
The NFL took off like a wildfire growing more and
more popular, bringing both new and old fans to
games. New stadiums were built to hold huge
amounts of people. New teams were made for each conference over the years.
Teams are occasionally relocated and renamed.
There are two conferences. The two conferences are the National Football
Conference and the American Football Conference. Before the preseason there is the
NFL draft, this is where teams take turns choosing athletes from college that they want
on their team although not all college players are drafted to the NFL. The preseason is
where a team will play three or four games against other teams to get ready for the
regular season. None of the preseason games count against or help a team’s regular
season record, they are merely warmup games. However in the regular season every
game counts, a team needs to win a certain amount of games in order to make it in the
playoffs. Sometimes there are extremely talented players who lead their team to the
playoffs. Now there are the NFC playoffs and the AFC playoffs. The playoffs are a series
of games where two teams play each other, the winning team would advance while the
losing team is eliminated. The final team of the NFC and AFC playoffs are going to the
championship called The Super Bowl. After the Super bowl the season ends and teams
begin practicing for the next one.
