The Sheyenne River Valley was originally occupied by the Cheyenne tribe, they were once known as the Chaa, and remained there until the early 18th century. The Cheyenne tribe’s first encounter with white people in 1680 didn’t end nicely for them. The encounter ended up with the Cheyenne tribe being moved from their home and west to the Great Plains. To make life easier in the Great Plains the Cheyenne switched lifestyles and became nomadic buffalo hunters and started living in tepees instead of earth - covered lodges. They were separated into warrior clans but, in 1832, the Cheyenne tribe was split into two groups, the Northern Cheyenne and Southern Cheyenne. The Northern Cheyenne was found along the Platte River while the Southern Cheyenne…
The Pigeon River flows through North Carolina and right here into East Tennessee. The Pigeon River got its name from an extinct bird, which migrated through the valley of North Carolina. Although, the Pigeon River looks nice, there is something extremely harmful going on inside the river. The long-polluted Pigeon River in Cocke County has not been “fishable” or “swimmable” for over 100 years due to pollution. The river’s water has turned dark brown, and has a terrible odor. The reason behind this beautiful river being polluted is the Blue Ridge Paper Company. The Blue Ridge Paper Company, once part of Champion International Paper, in Canton, North Carolina, is a primary source of Dioxin and matter pollution that has been discharged into the river. Not only has the Blue Ridge Paper Company polluted the water, it gets worse, a couple years ago in 2004, after…
Originating in the Klamath Mountains, the Sacramento River is the largest river in California, draining over 70,000 kilometers. Located within Northern and Central California, the Sacramento River flows south for about 412 kilometers until it reaches the San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. The Sacramento River runs through 19 Californian counties, being bounded by Sierra Nevada and Coast Rangers, area known as the Sacramento Valley. For about 12,000 years, the river has been used by many Indian tribes due to its natural resources. The river was “officially” discovered by European settlers in the 1700s. The river was named “Rio de los Sacramentos” meaning “river of the sacrament” by Gabriel Moraga…
Martha’s Vineyard is a small island five miles off the southeastern shore of Massachusetts settled in the mid to late 17th century. For nearly 300 years, from the early eighteenth century to the mid twentieth century, it was home to a remarkably high percentage of deaf Americans who developed their own sign language, Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language. This isolated island allowed sign language to flourish beyond the deaf community, dissolving barriers between deaf and hearing prevalent in the rest of the world.…
Kayaking can be a wonderful, relaxing sport, what better place to do it than the scenic, nature filled area of the Indian River Lagoon in Central Florida. We moved to the Sebastian area of Central Florida around five years ago, but we didn't discover what the Indian River Lagoon had to offer until the last two. Now we look forward to the outstanding experience of kayaking on it as often as possible. Whether you have your own kayak or rent one in the area you are sure to have a great time. The lagoon is a great place for beginners because it is so shallow. In the Sebastian area the lagoon is only about a mile across to the other side and most of it is so shallow that you can stand up if you accidently flip your kayak. You can paddle north or…
I completed the GEOG 285- Landscaping and Geography course and it exceeded all of my expectations! This three week program was the perfect mix of exploring, scenery, learning, and exhilaration. There is a great balance between school and fun and the field trips are remarkable. There is also enough time during weekends to go on personal trips. This class offers the opportunity of a lifetime and I loved every second of it. I had the chance to truly experience learning abroad and I met many cool people throughout the endeavor. The University of Otago staff were incredible and made me feel at home. I highly recommend this program and would do it again in a heartbeat! :)…

I wanted to thank you for allow me to sit in on the staff meeting. I had a few ideas about patrolling and helping keep the city parks safe. As you said the PD does not have the staffing to dedicate units to the park, but maybe we can help reduce crime and the fear of crime with no additional PD resources. What I was thinking was a “watch group” for each park. The great thing is the hard work is already done for us and most of the city parks have groups dedicated to help protect and preserves the parks. (Friends of Garden of the Gods, Friends of Red Rock Canyon, Friends of Cheyenne Canon, Friends of Monument Valley Park, Friends of Ute Valley Park, Guardians of Palmer Park) We can reach out to these groups and talk with them about the issues and create groups within these groups. It could be coordinated through the Crime Prevention Officers and free training could be offered to the volunteers on what to look for and how to report incidents or issues they are seeing. We know that it is not just about having a police officer out there, but any visible presence is a deterrent as we have seen with the Community Service Officers.…
What is the concept of ecological services? What are ecological services of rivers and why are they important? What ecological services of rivers will decline due to human influence and why they will decline?…
For my time spent doing community service, I chose the Urban Ecology Center. I was mainly interested in the field research opportunities as they pertained to my education in Natural Science as well as my own personal passions and interest. The Urban Ecology Center is a community built organization, which gives back to the environment, educates children on being conscious of the environment as well as provides a public space for any one to come and be a part of the goings on or just hang out and use the facilities. The Urban Ecology Center at Riverside Park is where I spent most of my volunteer hours, the building is more adequate for school groups and…
The civilizations along the Nile River Valley in ancient Egypt and the Yellow River Valley in Ancient China shared many characteristics in relation to many economic, social, and political structures, though they also have some differences. Water, whether it be in the form of a lake, an ocean, or a river, has played a critical role in the development of any civilization. With that being said, both the Nile River and the Yellow River had civilizations that strived because of them.…
Parks and other protected areas of both Canada and the United States are very important to both of them. Parks in both of these places are there for the public to enjoy. It is a place where they can get away from things and enjoy nature. Not only do the people of Canada and the United States love their parks so do those from other counties. The mountains, deserts, prairies, rivers, and lakes draw people from all over.…
It has been proven that having the right landscaping can increase a home's property value by thousands of dollars. There are several reasons for this. First of all, gardens make a house look more charming and livable. To prove this fact, try driving around the area that you live in as if you are a new home buyer. As you will see, the houses that seem the most appealing are not the ones with stark lawns. Second of all, having a garden that is already planted and prepared is easier to care for than one that has to be started from scratch. And lastly, gardens and landscaping help the environment by providing shade and reducing soil erosion. Those who are interested in increasing their property value, or just making their home look nicer, can try…
