What information about diversity in the United States has helped you better understand or relate to others in ways that you may not have in the past?
In my studies I have found confirmation of my belief that diversity in the United States will only improve with time as the increasing number of interracial unions increase. I have also affirmed my belief that so long as society chooses to put people into groups we will always have issues surrounding fair treatment of people from all walks of life. It is the collective mentality that harms our nation the most. So long as people are divided they lack the strength to overcome governmental intrusion into their personal lives. So long as “we the people” are divided we will continue to see attacks on various groups of people, rather than the peace that unity can bring.
Have you learned something new about your own racial, ethnic, or cultural history?
I have learned that there are similarities between my own culture and that of others. For example, I was surprised to learn that head coverings are not limited to Muslim women but also include some devote Jewish women. I found it intriguing to learn the history behind it and how to put one on. I did experiment with this at home out of curiosity and perhaps to feel a deeper personal connection to my roots. What is frightening to find are quotes such as this,” “The myth of the Holocaust is an industry that America invented,” Shihab-Eddim said, leaving no room for doubt that the Egyptian government -- like Iran 's -- has at the very least significant elements that deny humanity’s greatest crime of all. “U.S. intelligence agencies in cooperation with their counterparts in allied nations during World War II created it [the Holocaust] to destroy the image of their opponents in Germany, and to justify war and massive destruction against military and civilian facilities of the Axis powers,
