Before diving into discussing Nichiren as a religious nationalist, it is imperative to explore how he also stands as a religious reformist. The definition of reform essentially entails the removal of a flawed method or body of circumstances, and the introduction of an “improved form or condition” (Merriam-webster). In the Risshōankokuron, or “The Treatise on the Establishment of the Orthodox Teaching and the Peace of the Nation”, Nichiren writes with a particular fervor and sense of urgency, which sets the tone for his stance as an unrelenting religious force.…
The essay uses many elements on the t-shirt as evidence to support the argument, mainly at three angles: group identities, appearance and overall tone. It is not developed in a progressive approach which may diminish the strength…
Did you ever wonder what happens to the unwanted clothes you give away to charities? You probably thought they are sent to the needy - but how did they get there? When filmmaker Shantha Bloemen was stationed in a Zambian village, she noticed almost everyone in the village wore secondhand clothing from USA, from the elder decked out in a Chanel jacket to women in AC/DC T-shirts, to children sporting Adidas sneakers. She began to question if the original owners had any idea that the castoffs they had given to charities ended up being sold to Africans half a world away. She started to film this, investigating the secondhand clothes business and its effect on an increasingly globalised economy.…
When Cave states "Their low prices and hip-but-wholesome branding strategy are supposed to present a healthy alternative to the conspicuous consumption of a Calvin Klein," (68) the connotation of the statement is negative because of the fact that simple, cheap-but-stylish stores like Old Navy are selling clothes to the middle class so they are able to feel special and in coordination with the world's genre of clothing. Cave almost defends the critics like Thomas Frank that have a problem with people that aren’t financially stable enough to go out and nonchalantly spend $500 on designer clothes labeled with tags of flamboyancy; so instead, they use their resources to buy articles of value and style. But Joel Reichart's statement that "They provide remarkable value," (69) and "They're truly satisfying people's needs," (69) gives the defendant side that in the jungle of popular culture, there is still room to let people of lesser income to insert stylish and attractive possessions in their lives in order to present their selves in a way that doesn’t allow profiling to be strictly based on clothes. In the world, people were, and still are, being judged greatly or lightly by materialistic ideas like what type of jeans they wore on a normal weekday.…

An economic downturn has influenced the clothing market since the early 2000s, which has led to a change in consumer buying habits. Because of the downturn, customers are very price sensitive and prefer less expensive apparel, as over half of the clothing sold in the apparel industry has been done so “on sale”. To cut their costs, many companies have begun to outsource. In 2005, imports accounted for 82% of all sales.…
It is interesting to see how the habit of recycling clothes has suffered such a transformation in the last decades. It used to come with a certain feeling of shame as it used to be a social marker for poverty. (Veblen, 1899). But in recent years, particularly young people have tapped into this niche market and rummaged through to find good bargains. This practice can be observed all over the world; vintage shops and charity shops can be found in every city.…

“Dress as an expression of the pecuniary culture” (1899) expresses Thorstein Veblen’s view on the issue of the representation and abuse of dress in his society. Veblen tries to answer a very important question that, even over a century later, we still ask ourselves. Why do we spend more than we need to on clothes? Veblen views this phenomenon through an economic lens, which allows us to gain a different insight into the motive of dress. What makes Veblen an interesting read is how many of his claims surrounding this question ring true and remain applicable to this day and society. For instance, Veblen tries to explain why people participate in “wasteful consumption” (1899, P.339) using…
