Why?
My favorite piece of writing this semester was interpreting a poem because this was something that I never did before. I decided to write about the “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy. I chose this poem because I felt it depicted a problem which we still face in today’s society. It also incorporates the idea of unfair gender roles that we read about in our Critical Theory books. I knew it would be interesting to tie the two concepts together and formulate a thesis proving that the poor character’s insecurities were driven by the standards the patriarchal world instilled within her.
Further, due to the fact that I am also a young girl living in today’s crazy world, I felt I could relate to the character within the poem, and therefore writing about it would be more meaningful. It is best to write about something that you feel you can connect to so that you can provide more insight. This is when writing starts to make sense; when the author feels an emotional tie to the text.
I also found the topic of gender roles to be an interesting issue to write about. It is fascinating to see the effects of gender roles and the way in which they control how a society functions.
