Childhood
Robert Frost was born in San Francisco in 1874. Both his parents were teachers, and Robert was early on exposed to the world of books and reading, studying such works as those by William Shakespeare and poets Robert Burns and William Wordsworth. He also formed a life-long love of nature, the great outdoors and rural countryside. After enrolling in Lawrence High School he was soon writing his own poems including “La Noche Triste” which was published in the school’s paper. He excelled in many subjects including history, botany, Latin and Greek, and played football, graduating at the head of his class.
Family Life
His family life had a lot of grief in it. Aged 11 his father died of tuberculosis five years later his mother died of cancer. In 1920, Frost had to commit his younger sister Jeanie to a mental hospital, where she died nine years later. Mental illness apparently ran in Frost's family, as both he and his mother suffered from depression, and his daughter Irma was committed to a mental hospital in 1947. Frost's wife, Elinor, also experienced bouts of depression. Robert married and had six children onlt two of them outlived their parents. His wife died in 1938.
Education
Robert Frost got a good education. In 1892 Frost graduated from a high school and attended Darthmouth College for a few months. Frost was a good student and stood out at many subjects.
From 1897 to 1899 he studied at Harvard, but left without receiving a degree.
Robert Frost took a lot of inspiration from nature and the landscape of his homeland. His wife also inspired him in his poetry.
