Robert Krepps's Pride Of Seven

The short story written by Robert W. Krepps “ Pride of Seven” illustrates a person following their own beliefs may have a greater outcome than one that follows society’s expectations. The story begins in South Africa with the Masai tribe, and the Dutch narrator . The Masai’s belief is to become a man you must kill a lion. The dutchman helped his friend En-gerr try to kill a lion that way he could become a man. They come across a huge lion called El Asfar and En-gerr wanted to have him be the first lion he killed, but the dutchman had a bond with El Asfar and did not wanted En-gerr to shoot the lion. With the Masai tribe watching there is extra pressure to try and kill a lion, but to surrender and not kill a lion and still think of yourself as a man like En-gerr did, just to have the Masai tribe respect that is a huge outcome and achievement. Finally the author establishes that a person following their own beliefs is stronger than a person following society’s expectations when the dutchman was talking about what En-gerr did. The dutchman says,” Then The Sheep did a magnificent thing, the bravest,daftest act imaginable”(8). The dutchman is describing that En-gerr putting down his weapons and plucking a piece of grass to surrender to the lion is a magnificent thing that he has ever seen. Also that the daftest act imaginable is not only is he surrendering to the lion, but in front of the whole Masai tribe, who thinks you are not a man unless you kill a lion.
