Robert Murat
The first suspect identified by Portuguese police was Robert Murat, a British-Portuguese consultant who lived with his mother just 150 yards away from the location where Jane Tanner spotted a man carrying a barefoot child. Three separate members of the McCann’s party later stated that they saw Murat near the resort of the evening of May 3rd, although both Murat and his mother told police that he was at home all-evening long.
Police conducted a thorough investigation of Robert Murat and his possessions, going so far as to conduct a forensic analysis on his computer, phone, and video camera, and even searching his home and property with police sniffer dogs and ground-penetrating radar. Despite the police investigation of Murat and his property, he was cleared on July 21, 2008, when the Portuguese justice department closed the case. However, he was questioned again in 2014 by Portuguese police on behalf of Scotland Yard once the case was re-opened.

The police investigators would ask a question in Portuguese and then have the translator ask the question in English. The McCanns and their friends would then answer the question in English, which was then translated into Portuguese for the police. Finally, the police then typed up the statement provided by the McCanns and members of the Tapas Seven in Portuguese, before verbally reading the statement back to them in English and asking them to sign the document.
