With so many boys on the island there are many different types of personalities that are shown but some stick out more than others based on their actions and how they act around their peers. In the allegory novel Lord of the flies by William Golding, a group of young British boys get stranded on an island alone with no adults. They have to work together to survive but many issues arise. Lord of the flies demonstrates the Roger is a bad character by showing him bullying younger kids on the island, being violent, and bloodthirsty. While Ralph was hiding he heard the cries of Sam and Eric and those sounds were of them getting tortured for the information of Ralph's location. These screams of agony were caused by Roger. “He heard fresh noises - cries of pain from SamnEric, cries of panic, angry voices…” (191) Roger is malicious in the way he gets the location of Ralph out of the twins. He tortures them to get answers then burns down half the island trying to capture and kill Ralph. Ralph was so terrified Jack and Roger would kill him next and hid but Roger was more violent than he expected in finding a way to get to him. Also toward the middle of the book, after the boys had been on the island for a while their hair starts to grow longer. “Not one of them was an obvious subject for a shower, and yet-hair, much too long, tangled here and there, knotted round a dead leaf or a twig…scurfy with brine” (Golding 110). The length of the boy's hair symbolises how much more savage they have become since first arriving on the island. The longer their hair is the more wild they are and Rogers hair had become very long. In Lord of the Flies Roger was a violent murdering kid who bullied others on the island. He was not a good person. His actions proved who he truly was. Throughout the book some characters appear to be leaders, some are followers, some are smart, some are clever, but Rogers true self is uncontrollable, homicidal, and he is all around from the very beginning a horrible mean
