Roland Emmerich's The Patriot
The Patriot
“If you mean by patriot, am I angry about taxation without representation, well, yes I am. Should the American colonies govern themselves independently? I believe that they can, and they should. But if you are asking me, am I willing to go to war with England? Well, then the answer is most definitely NO!” – The Patriot
The Patriot was directed and produced by Roland Emmerich in 2000 and filmed in Charleston, South Carolina where parts of the movie were actually based. The movie stars Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, and Joely Richardson. Set during the American Revolution, French and Indian war-hero Benjamin Martin leads a makeshift army of peasants, slaves, a minister, and assorted other irregulars after his son Thomas is killed by

Although Benjamin Martin was a fictional character, some of the battles he took part in and some of the people he interacted with in the movie were historical figures. Mel Gibson 's character is said to be a merge of several historic people; Francis Marion, Thomas Sumter, and Andrew Pickens. In the movie there is also almost a complete lack of the Loyalists. A large part of the population of the Carolinas and Georgia remained loyal to Britain, and a lot of the fighting took place there between the Tories and Whigs. The film actually only shows one Loyalist soldier, Captain Wilkins in Colonel Tavington 's dragoons. Tavington himself is based on Banastre Tarleton, who commanded the British Legion, a Loyalist regiment. One of the battles in the film is based on the Battle of Cowpens and the final battle on the surrender of …show more content…

He told his sons Nathan and Samuel, “Aim small, miss small” as they picked off British soldiers one by one. This was one of the moral dilemmas I found in the movie. Benjamin Martin asked his boys to kill people at such a young age right after they had just watched one of their older brothers be murdered ruthlessly in their own front yard. After the attack, his sons were both visibly upset over what their father had asked them to do. These young boys were asked to do the jobs of men which is why I found this as one of the most noticeable moral

The film The Patriot is not historically accurate. In fact, it is doubtful if the purpose of the film was to be historically accurate. It is most likely it was for sheer entertainment. Nevertheless, the film did not portray British soldiers, the way people saluted one another and the protagonist Benjamin Martin accurately. For these reasons is why it remains impossible to call it historically…

In “The Patriot”, the tactics of war used by the British Army differ significantly from those used by the American rebels. The British based war and victory on honor. If a battle is not won properly, it might as well have not been won at all. Benjamin Martin, the leader of the rebels, identifies the pride of the British as their weakness. The American rebels based war on victory itself and concentrated their efforts in simply defeating the British. Their sole objective is to win; they did not have the luxury of being “civil” in their war tactics. This contrast is shown very well in several scenes from the movie.…

Joseph Plumb Martin was born “upon the twenty-first of November, in the year of 1760” (Martin 6). His grandparents raised him on their Connecticut farm. Inspired by the Battles of Lexington and Concord he decided to enlist into the army. He was eager to help for the patriotic cause. In June of 1776, at the age of 15, Martin was able to enlist but didn’t want to sign up for a long enlistment. Soldiers at the time were enlisting for a year’s service but he did not like that and thought it was too long a time for him for the first trial, “I wished only to take a priming before I took upon me the whole coat of paint for a soldier” (Martin 16). Orders soon came allowing men to enlist for six months so Martin enrolled in the Connecticut state militia. After serving in the Battles of Brooklyn, Kip’s Bay, and White Plains in New York Martin decided not to reenlist when his stint ended. In 1777 Martin decided to reenlist after a long and dull winter at his grandparents Connecticut farm. This time he served under George Washington’s Continental Army and seen action in a number of major battles until the duration of the war.…

Benjamin said it was madness to go to war with Great Britain. He was a patriot but he thought that the problem could be solved in a more peaceful way. After much debate it was decided that South Carolina would help support the creation of an army. His oldest son Gabriel wanted to sign up to join the army much to his father’s protest. Gabriel told his father that he intended to sign up no matter what he said. Then an account of Gabriel’s time in the army is shown as he fights in the north and said he would be heading to South Carolina to stop General Cornwallis. That morning Gabriel comes home wounded and is almost shot by his father. Meanwhile, the Patriot retreat in the area results in wounded on both sides. Benjamin helped wounded on both sides and had them stay at his home. The British military arrived and thanked him for helping soldiers of the crown. One of the soldiers found dispatches that were meant for Patriot hands and asked who was carrying them. Gabriel admitted to carrying them and they took him prisoner. Colonel William took free African Americans and executed the wounded Patriots. As the soldiers begin to tie Gabriel to the…

A great nation is comprised of a strong dependable government, with citizens who agree with the government and support it, Britain has made this impossible. What Britain calls a monarchy has now become a tyranny; the innocent victims will no longer tolerate the unbearable acts and the ridiculous laws. Because of these insufferable actions made, two sides have been formed. The loyalists and their ill faith in this, now corrupt, country. And there are the patriots, who stand for the much deserved justice and fairness of the colonists. My beliefs stand strongly with the patriots, for I only wish the good fortune and liberty of my people, and in order to achieve that, we must gain independence.…

Although the story of Benjamin is compelling and inspirational, it is based off of inaccurate historical assumptions. The American Revolution portrayed in The Patriot was more about the war America wanted it be rather than what it was. The film glorifies American victories as well as American war heroes, while portraying “the redcoats” as sadistic, brutal, and abominable creatures. A perfect example of such bias is the film’s antagonist, Colonel William Tavington, who is a fictional representation of General Sir Banastre Tarleton. The film uses misconception and inaccuracy to portray the victory of America over the British, as a representation of a sanctified glory of angels over demons.…

Early in the movie Mel Gibson, who plays Lt. Col. Hal Moore, is portrayed more as a husband and father than as a soldier. His wife Julie (played by Madeline Stowe) displays much support and respect for her husband and his job. Many other women were also introduced at the start of the film and later we learned who their husbands were. There were many small scenes during this segment of the movie that were both intriguing and gave an idealistic sense of realism to the film. One such scene is when Cecil Moore(played by Sloam Momsen), Moore's youngest daughter, asks her father "What is a War?" At that moment Moore tries for a few seconds to come up with the simplest answer, but when he realizes that it is not that simple he just tells her what it…

The American Revolution embarked the beginning of the United States of America. A war that lasted eight years, 1775-1783, was able to grant the thirteen colonies the independence they deserved by breaking free of British rule. The war was an effect of the previous French and Indian War, which forced England to tax the American colonist, compelling them to rebel against parliament. From the 1760’s to 1775, many factors lead up to the American Revolution such as the various acts the British Parliament passed to pay the war debt, no representation in parliament, and the American people wanting to gain their independence. “No Taxation without Representation”, a slogan used by the American colonist, was the most important cause of the colonists declaring war for their independence on the British government.…
