I wasn’t a big fan of the film 1492. The portrayal of Christopher Columbus in this film was very inaccurate as far as what he brought to the so-called "New World". The film displayed Columbus as the first person to locate America and to cross the Atlantic Ocean but as history shows others had accomplished this years before he did. In the film he could be looked at as both the villain and as a hero. He was obviously looked at as a hero to some because he is the one who was supposedly responsible of discovering America. Even though Christopher Columbus is thought to have discovered the New World, a lot of people considered him to be a villain because of the way he treated the indigenous people he met. He enslaved natives and demanded
many of them to convert to Christianity and would use violence against them. In the film you could see that the lack of respect and his inability to find a significant amount of gold led to a lot of violence, which brought war between the Natives Americans and the Europeans.
A lot of the differences between the Native Americans and Europeans came because they both had negotiation on which that should become the United States. Christopher Columbus also falsely identified the Native Americans as Indians and they were very offended by that. Many people think the reason for this is because Columbus did not know how far from India he was at the time.
All in all, I don’t think I would watch this film again. Some of the things that I didn’t like about the film was that it was 2.5 hours long. I just think it was way too long and very slow developing. It was hard for me to follow. The movie displayed the Spaniards and the Natives Americans getting along in a composed fashion when in actuality that was not the case, they treated the Natives Americans very poorly. To me the movie only showed the good things that Columbus brought to the islands and doesn't show how the Spaniards brought diseases.
