To start off, the most obvious aspect of the horror genre that is in this film is vampires as they are a supernatural creature. The Vampires in the film are what you would expect; blood-sucking beasts with their sharp teeth, which sleep upside down, cast no reflection and who are afraid of sunlight. But that’s not all of it.…
This excerpt from Mr. Temple’s book displays one of the major strengths of his entire novel- how animated it is. “Billy Hull was the owner of a local hardware and a local church leader. He wanted to cleanse his town of the evil of illegal drugs. He was partially paralyzed Vietnam veteran bound to a wheelchair, and Michael suspected that this was also a chance to feel relevant beyond his geographical and physical limitations. “You must be Lee Roy Brown, my new assistant,” he said.…
During the holocaust, many people suffered due to the loss of their loved ones. The memoir Night by Elie Wiesel tells the story of what those who did not meet Hitler’s expectations while creating a superior race had to endure at the concentration camps. Thesis By using symbolism and setting, Wiesel creates the message that love is sacrificed in order to survive.…
In the movie Edward Scissorhands, the dark and shadowy castle looks like something out of a horror movie. This is one of Tim Burton’s lighting techniques to make everything look grotesque and ominous.…
Authors use many elements in literature to help enhance their text. These texts in literature are further strengthened because of the elements being used. There are hundreds of literary devices being used everyday, but symbolism is one of the more common ones used. Symbolism is a huge element that plenty of authors use in their text. The literary element symbolism enhances a text by showing complex definitions of items used and seen everyday, helping create emotion in a story, and building onto the theme with positive effects.…
The text Dracula was written in a time long before post-modernism, when Victorian values were considered important and issues relating gender were established. Nosferatu was also written in the time of modernism, where there was a sense in that western culture had lost its values. Shadow of a Vampire is a recent, post-modern text that focuses on the filming methods and techniques used to film Nosferatu. Using post-modern techniques that are comparable to satire in some scenes, Shadow of a Vampire combines the two gothic texts into a new text, using a film within a film technique.…
Shadow of the Vampire is a post-modern text which is a reconstruction of Dracula, a novel by Bram Stoker, and Nosferatu a film directed by F.W. Murnau. The use of intertexuality in Shadow of the Vampire is a key aspect which allows it to echo; themes, the gothic mode and issues that are present in the other two texts. Through a clear pastiche, Merhige produces a new text from the old.…

Soon the darkness is large enough to make out the figure of a person. A dark figure trying to destroy the light, it stands there, just long enough to give the audience time to try and work out who did it but their attention is then wrenched back to the movie by the loud piercing sound of screeching violins with only half formed suspicions racing…
The mosquito is my shadow animal totem because it tests me to overcome small irritations. When a mosquito bites me, I’m usually not too happy about it. Even though it is just a small bump on me, it allows the mosquito to lay its eggs as the small amount of blood they suck is enough to last for a few days. After I have been bitten I need to find the patience to overcome the itchiness. Realistically, a mosquito bite is just a small inconvenience but I am afraid to stop worrying about it and move on to the bigger things that actually need my attention.…

This Jofa Film Studios film is all about the filming of a film. The movie that is being filmed is known as Nosferatu. The Shadow of the Vampire is not a hundred percent accurate to the movie directed by Friedrich Murnau. This movie gives the viewer a look at what is going on behind the scenes. This movie may seem more appealing to the viewer than the original movie, Nosferatu. The movie is not in black and white and it also has sound and color. This movie is also a lot more modern than the other one. The characters remain the same, but the actors have their own names that they go by.…
Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt is no less than a perfect example of film noir. Low-key lighting, dramatic shadow patterning, and camera angles are all expertly used to foreshadow and portray the emotions and psyche of the characters. Hitchcock uses sets and props to mirror scenes, creates characters that are remarkably similar but simultaneously conflicting, and emphasizes emotions that offer contradictions. The sense of duality and contradiction in the film demonstrates how darkness can take the form of humanity and seep into even the most innocent places and the purest hearts. The mystery of the film is not what causes the suspense, but rather the anxiety that the audience feels stems from Hitchcock’s use of duality as a means to force the audience to face the fact that human contradiction comes from the discontinuity between natural impulses and intellect. He creates parallels that underline similarities and differences that occur simultaneously in society and individuals.…
The film “Nosferatu” is a horror story about a vampire and its relationship with a young couple. The film is a product of German expressionism and uses misshapen views of reality, symbolism, eroticism and shadows to enhance the dark mood of the film. German expressionists, through certain patterns and styles, sought to show that reality could be seen through emotion. Their intent was to arouse feelings in their audience, for example through the use of vibrant colors and shapes or distortion. Many German expressionists were interested in the strange states that the mind can enter, which is seen when Ellen sleepwalks in “Nosferatu.”…
